untill i was about 16 i could hold my breath for several minutes with no discomfort underwater whatsoever now im 19 and have not free dived very much atall since i was 16 and was shocked to find out that i can only hold my breath from 20 to 60 seconds now!! not only that but by the end of it before i surface or breath out my lungs seem to be having muscle contractions which i can only tollerate very uncomfortably for about 10 seconds before being forced to breath out.

how long will it take for me to get back to where i was before? i have always been fit but am fitter now than ever before.

also i know i am capable of holdign my breath for longer becasue i have been trapped under water last year, i dont know for how long really but i have never felt so relaxed despite the situation and really felt like i never had to breath again, a feeling i would liek to have again.

hi welshmikey,
Just start training your body and it will soon grow accustomed to it again. Relaxation is the key try using the tables in the link below and getting back in the water as much as possible.
