Hey guys,

I am new to this forum. First of all compliments on putting together such a resourceful site for all thing pertaining to freediving. I am fairly new to the sport and am eager to learn more. I am also cognizant of the risks associated with freediving as well as the importance of receiving training from experienced professionals. I have perused Terry Maas' book cover to cover and have read a number of interesting postings/articles on this site as well as on others. However, I would like to start getting practical training in the water with some experienced individuals. I've looked into the Performance Freediving course in Miami and am contemplating taking the July intermediate course. However, I currently reside in Dallas and it would be great if I could find something closer. I noticed that (i) Tanya Streeter resides in Austin, and (ii) she has taught freediving clinics in the past. I am sure she has a very busy schedule with her training and all of her PR events and not sure whether she still offers training courses? I was wondering if there is any way to contact her? I respect her privacy and I am sure she gets plenty of e-mails from people like me who are interested in getting into the sport.

If any of you guys could let me know if (i) she responds to public e-mails, and (ii) if you know the best way to contact her, I would very much appreciate.

Additionally, if there are any other Dallas guys that are interested in organizing such a clinic or simply interested in getting together to dive, please let me know.

Charlie

Charlie,

Welcome to the forums!

I can recommend the PFI courses - Kirk, Martin, Mandy-Rae and the crew are all superb teachers and it's well worth taking their course.

As far as Tanya is concerned - she is a very approachable person and is always keen to help - it's just that her schedule means she is travelling a lot! I don't know of any immediate plans for a clinic but best contact her through her website http://www.redefineyourlimits.com

Stephan,

I appreciate the prompt response. I have been to her website. However, the only problem is that there is no direct contact info on there.

Thanks,

Charlie

From one Texan to another, welcome aboard!

I've shared a few e-mails with Tanya regarding any kind of a clinic that she might be doing. At the time, she had other things that took priority. I know she used to teach a clinic in the Caymans, but hasn't for a while now (I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's right). I also know she travels a lot so anything even mildly resembling a clinic in Texas probably won't happen. But as Stephan said, she's very approachable and has been known to lurk on these forums.

As far as training and safety are concerned, a group in Texas does get together from time to time to work on deep diving. Frequently, it's in lake Travis, but we've been to other spots as well. We are a very supportive group that really stresses safety and learning. I know of at least 2 divers in Dallas, and probably 10 more throughout the state. Do a search for "Texas Freedivers" and you should pull up an old thread in the "Find a Buddy" section. Besides that check out http://www.stfreedivera.org/index.html. That's the Texas Freediving group that Don started. Don's in Corpus and is also very approachable, I would recommend talking to him before pursuing Tanya further. He is an accomplished spearfisherman/freediver and could really teach you a lot if you are interested. He's also on the forums, his user name is "Donmoore".

Beyond that, I know there is a group that teaches some sort of a freediving class in Houston for much cheaper than Kirk's clinic. However, this is not a "cheaper is better" sport, and I've heard nothing of their reputation. In fact, I think a SCUBA instructor runs it just "on the side" so to speak. It's worth checking out if nothing else.

Hope that helps, if you have any more questions, or gain any new information, please PM me or Don. Good luck and keep us updated, till later...
