Got in down south coast on thursday on the boat.. vis was good offshore.. only saw one bass but he was a good size and lined himself up nicely for a perfect headshot. Awesome day out.. so stoked to take a really good sized bass on the first proper hunt of the year! Enjoy

haha Tunny you're so right! i'll lob up some pics tomorrow mate - im still pimping it atm, but me and my mate got one each - pretty pleased with em so far - and when you compare 35 quid to 230 for the beuchat one - I think it's a steal!

You have just inspired me to do some more pimpin' - just added 4 more D-rings (painstaking slow sewing with thick thread, needle nose pliers and a strong needle) complete with bungee cord zig-zagging so I can mount my short speargun to the L/H rib of the float and secured the flag 'bodge' a little better! Will post a photo later...

One of the most entertaining & realistic vids that I have seen by a English forum member! :king
Personally I find it more effective to kill bass by finding the backbone through the gill covers, this not only kills the fish very quickly but also bleeds them.
Anyway I agree with Dave it was good to see the fish dispatched quickly rather than 5 mins of vid showing a suffering fish.
I also like the on board footage in the van & boat as it shows the true picture of what was involved to catch the bass.

I'm hoping to film a lot more this year.. and spear a lot more bass!! (I still can't bloody surf after my op at New Year :head)

If anyone's keen to hook up for some bass hunting.. I'm really keen to dive new ground, see bigger fish, deeper water, wrecks.. generally push myself harder I know its always a big call to give away your spots but I'll keep it on the low down (blindfold me if ya have to!) and I'd be more than happy to put together an edit of the day's events for ya. PM if ya keen - for the dive that is not the blindfolding!!

Thanks Crispin, yeah that was my first time at that spot.. been wanting to check it for a while tho as I have fished around there a few times. Stoked with the bass tho.. thought there'd be more than just the one about.. but hey as always it's luck of the draw eh! one was enough!

Hello all - as per last year (and the ones before ) the LIC will be hosting the pairs competition down at the O'Three facilities in Portland on Saturday the 9th July. This is not a regular comp and is based on specimen fish only - but moreover it is a good laugh with a BBQ and something to drink after.

Last year we had 60 competitors and 100 people at the BBQ.

You can fish anywhere in the UK during the day as long as you weigh-in at 4pm.

Recently bought myself a Cressi geronimo crevasse 55 for flatty hunting/nightdiving as I was finding my 75 was unwieldy when hunting the bass in the shallows (2-4m) and flatties on the open sand.
What I want to know is if I see a bass or mullet would the trident head currently fitted work ? or is it not going to be powerful enough and not penetrate far enough resulting in them wriggling off the spear ?
It has a screw top so not too difficult to change the tip.

There is hardly a person on the site who uses such a small gun, you want to kill your prey not hurt it!
With flatfish I find my 90 is perfect for prodding the bottom & hand spearing any fish found, you dont want to be swimming to close to the bottom as this will really restrict your scanning area.
For hunting bass in the string weed a 75 is great but you could use a 90 airgun for more power & the same length as a 75 band gun.
A trident head 55 band gun has no range other than point blank.

Hi Andy I use a 55 with a lamp on the end for hole fishing and have taken some good fish with it. No real range as such but if you are in amongst the caves around rocks and boulders and don't want to bend your spear tips then it works fine.

The other thing to try with longer guns is to choke the bands. If you are in a tight spot with a 75 or 90 put your hand around the engaged rubbers when firing and it reduces the firing power. Sounds dodgy but people have been doing this for years - just make sure your fingers are all around the outside of the bands.

I maybe explained wrong as when i have had issues with the length has been in the shallows around the rocks where it is tight and have resulted in the spear getting embedded in the rock.
At night with the torch I use it does not ever exceed the range of a 55, TomH who I dive with always uses his 55 for night dives and caught the largest bass either of us has had with it. He does has a normal tip so I will look at changing it over from the trident.
Until I'm no longer a student I won't be able to afford a torch which can light up the sea floor !

If it works for you then why not. It is great to get a nice powerful torch though. You should be able to pick up one of the pre LED c4's quite cheap now. But I hear what you say about your student budget

Ive had a few tear off with the trident head, lower body shots tend to rip out easier but if you hit the fish near the gill plate it stuns the crap out of them

I used to use a 5 prong for flattie hunting but to be honest a normal standard shaft is the way to go

Thanks for all of the advice, will look for a standard tip, currently have a single 'flopper' on my 75 but have seen tips with two 'floppers' on both sides of the spear does this give a perceivable advantage ?
Also with torches I'm a big fan of LED for their durability and low power consumption, I have used a friends Kowalski torch which did light up a large area when i tired it scuba diving but was worried about knocking it on anything.
I do prefer not having to worry about knocking it on rocks, getting in and out and also when loading things in and out of the car. Maybe just me but as a student cant afford to be repairing things too often so tend to go for a more rugged product.
