Had a full on day of north coast spearing planned on the rib today. Up at 5am and first light launched the rib off the beach and, long comedy laced story short, found myself back on the sofa 30 minutes later having completely tweaked my lower back.
Wedding anniversary today too so even being granted permission for the whole thing was a miraculous feat in itself. Karma?

speared 5 nice bass yesterday at Gwithian,visability was great,was warm out there,saw huge spider crab and various fish.
God the viz is good up on the north coast! Nice combo with the bass and cod there bey, I raise my tanglefoot to you.

Dived the south coast tonight in a spot that I thought would be protected from the easterly's, unfortunately it was definitely not ! 1-3m vis thoughtout the depth. Managed 3 ok pollack in the end 
only bass/mullet seen was a 40-50 strong shoal which were at the edge of the vis and 3m above. lost my knife at some point somehow 
and then got jumped on by a crazy old fisherman trying to sell me a old pneumatic 75 (which is showed me how 'lethal' it was by firing it into the sand, and then a drunk came and asked me if the fish i caught were a bass. Mixed session that was certainly eventful !

get hassled by any seals out there?
andycornish - any idea what brand of pneumatic it was?
It was dusk and was more worried where he was waving it around ! but I think after a quick scour of google images and I think it was a cressi (maybe the 'cressi sub')
ahh no worries - thats what I use atm.
There are a couple of older rarer mares ones that can be customized and made to be a fantastic bit of kit, I was hoping it might have been one of them you see

Il be heading down there again and he said that he rod fishes there often so il take a closer look if i see him again, anyway I can tell its an old one ?
Got in on the north coast earlier. Vis was a bit disapointing as I thought it woud be tops. Saw a few modest Bass but didn't see anything to spear. I did swim in a huge shoal of sardines for a while and was expecting to spot a preditor or two any moment. No joy.
On the up side I've up my PB depth with the Sunto recording 9.2m. Dives came easier today I think I was in the right frame of mind.

I always think the fishless dives are more productive as there is more ambition to practise and improve diving skills instead, so good on ya! never a wasted trip and all that
i didnt get hassled the other day but yesterday i went there again and was comeing back in to shore in about 5 ft of water when a seal came right under me then turned and followed me,i met 2 lads on the beach when i got out who said last year they had a fish on and got bullied into giveing it to the seal.i dont think i would argue with one under the water,give him what he wants and be on my way,i play the guitar for a liveing and need all my fingers.
Yeah I wouldn't argue with them either - I had a mate who got bitten - 36 stitches from one bite. Plus i'd be pretty pissed off at having caught a load of fish and then having them eaten off my float, i'll try somewhere else I think.
Oh my god,was that at gwithian,why did it bite him,was he carrying fish.a lot of people just go out swimming with them for fun and they are playfull things.sounds like a nightmare to me,ripped apart by killer seals.
He is extremely lucky! Seals carry a bacteria in their mouths which can be very nasty in an open wound. I would have to check back through my notes from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue medic course i did but basically you have to tell the doctor you need a special anti biotic other wise you can be in serious trouble!
Saying that i have never had any issues really apart from having a seal take a mullet off my belt after sneaking up on me. All i felt was a quick tug and it was mauled! Usually i scare them off. Last week i had a good sized bass and a good sized flounder on my belt and i was being followed by a large seal. I did my usual thing of holding the fish (almost cuddling) the fish with one arm tight to my body and i shouted with my head in the water so there was alot of sound and bubbles. The seal then stayed further back. Next i suddenly finned about 6ft in his direction fast making the same sound and bubbles. I never saw him again. This has always worked.
I think its like any animal that if you show fear and back away from them they will follow. They want an easy feed with out confrontation. It is worth saying this last seal was a large bull seal about a mile from a large seal colony and not a small juvenile! Just be aware of the situation you are in. I would never do the scaring off a seal if it was a seal with young pups or a bull seal with his ladies. Or a cornered seal. Ultimately i would always give away the fish if it showed any real sign of aggression. I think everyone needs to be wary of giving away fish to easily to seals as this would then give an association of food with spearos (or divers in general) which would increase the chance of agression from seals after the fish!

Found the info quite quickly. Seal bites can lead to marine species of Brucella, Salmonella species and most commonly 'Seal Finger' which starts off as lesions, which swell and become painfull, and untreated leads to cellulitis, tenosnovitis and septic arthritis.
All Marine Mammal Medics are given a generic letter which you give to a doctor on recieving a seal bite as most doctors don't know how to treat it! This letter gives information on symtoms at medication required for successful treatment.
