You'd need a good drag!(I see that as a benefit of weaker line -- less chance of having to deal with a 10 foot shark in a 14 foot dinghy!).

rofl rofl ....good point!

Yesterday was the first day that i have had free in the last few weeks, and with beautiful sunshine, i decided to hook up with a buddy and go for a hunt down at our favourite location. When we arrived it was that time of the year... PLANKTON BLOOM (slugweed) :rcard :rcard :head

Anyway, we decided to go in anyway, but couldnt even see the end of our guns (90cm) :head . There is a small breeze forecasted over the next few days, so hopefully that will help it all clear away, as i have a few free days upcoming and was really hoping to get a few more sessions in.

Huw.

Two dives off two different headlands bracketing Newquay and 2 small bass seen...not much else either. A few Red Gurnards off a boat rod and I think I missed Dorset. Surf was quite flat too:head
Next time I'm driving to the cornish south coast.

Possibly heading to camp in Porthcurno area Thursday through to maybe Sunday with my sweetie. Anyone be able to join me for a dive or two? Would appreciate the company in unfamiliar waters.:wave

Good luck Jez. Porth Curno is one of my favourite places but have never speared or dived there (haven't been there for 20 years) - will be curious to know how you get on. I recall the beach is small, very steep, deep, clear with a reputation for danger (undercurrents ...and perhaps rips?).

crumbs! I have seen people surf there and got a good feel for the currents (when there's swell). Not sure I'll dive it though, too touristy and I rememeber seeing lots of pots. I'll find somewhere quiet and hopefully easy!

It was quiet when I was there (us, one family & a topless sunbather). Sounds like it has got more popular/well known in recent years (I know somebody that went there last year & he mentioned it was busy).

Beautiful dive yesteray..

Lots of decent sized bass seen. I decided to load my speargun on the more powerfull of the two notches on the spear, and missed 3shots :head, but then loaded up to the normal setting that i use and stoned a perfect bass first time! I guess the spear must leave the gun higher with extra power or something . Picked up a female spider crab on the way back in too. All in all a really good evenings spearing!

Huw.

Well done Huw.

On the point of Porthcurno, I have speared there a few times, having mullet and small bass. Had a double take when exiting the water when I was greeted by a holidaying Euro couple...naked!!!

Not the best cornwall spearing but interesting enough with seals as well as the usual suspects.

No probs with the currents when I was there. Met a French chap who appeared from around the headland who said there was some tide so be careful if you are going deep I suppose...

Winds look set southerley for few days so I'll probably head to the north coast for some exploring. Heading down this morning. I'm not sure if I'll be able to access the internet while down so will post any results next week. C ya.

Happy hunting Jez, looking forward to hearing your results.

After a good early start to the season taking a few Bass between 3 - 5lb, I had a shocking 2 weeks and resorted to lobster hunting. Viz was poor and any bass seen were small. I had decided the Bass had gone out again? based on what I was seeing. Lots of smooth hounds but no decent Bass.

Decided to hunt the boulders just outside the breaking waves today at a cove I havn't fished for about a year. Nice load of bubbles and soon spotted some bass hunting inline with the surf. Shot one Bass which is just over 5lb. Found some BIG ledges / caves but the swell was such I didn't fancy investigating. Reckon the ledges should hide some Bass this summer.

Hi all
Just back from the family holiday in deepest Cornwall and as always had a great time. Managed a couple of dives but just to look as no spearing allowed on the family trip. Went in at gunwallo’s Church Cove and had a good look all up the cliff’s towards the Lizard but saw nothing but bait fish viz was really good though must have been 8 to 10 meters at least. Kennack Sands was great again good viz but again hardly any fish except for some big wrasse and one small Bass.
Couldn’t pick up my new Mamba 90 as Spearo Dave has sold out so going to try again next week when myself and stuckinsurrey are down for a long weekend.
Had a look at Lamora Cove but there’s a bloody great sign that says NO SPEAR FISHING anybody know why? As it looks fishy as you like.
We will be staying at the Kennack Sands Inn from Friday to Monday next week if any of you Cornish boys fancy a dip in the drink.

Sharks in Cornwall

The Times, Saturday, Page 12. There was a story on a guy setting up a dozen shark encounter trips in Cornwall (half from Looe - a local shark fisherman involved in the project thought it would never work - & half from St.Ives(/to view sharks in Padstow?)). They are going to be chumming the water (a great way to train shark to attack spearos?). Seems odd to be doing this just as they are starting to clamp down on it else where in the world.

They also had an amazing arial shot of huge (14ft+?) basking shark close to into shore at Porth Curno, several people stood nearby. I think basking sharks eat krill or plankton - even so, I'd be well out of the water!

Just back from a camping trip to Treen (Porthcurno). Only managed one dive at Portheras Cove on the north coast yesterday, I spent most of the time visiting other stuff while there. I visited it two days before and saw two seals and a Sunfish (while admiring the view from the shore)! Yes, a Sunfish, like from them wildlife films on telly. Funny looking thing and was surprised how big it was.

Anyway, saw loads of Bass at Portheras, schoolies happy to hang around beneath me, some bigger ones creeping through the (I have to say massive) kelp below. Viz as far as you wanted. Decent Pollack also seen. I didn't venture that far out, partly because I was a bit wary of the seals being about and partly because I didn't have to, the fish were in really close.

I let some big Bass go as I'd only been in the water 10 minutes, thinking I could get some later. I didn't have refridgeration and if I was going to catch something, it couldn't hang around on the beach all day! It had to go from water to frying pan fairly sharpish. So obviously I didn't see any more worth shooting after that:head Had a lovelly dive though in a very beautiful spot (bit of a hike in and out though).

Visited Cape Cornwall. It's how Land's End should be, wild and beautiful, not covered in a shitty theme park. The water below looked fabulous for diving and there was even a little slipway tucked in at Priest's Cove below with people swimming off it. A very intimidating spot to dive no doubt what with it being the end of the world and all.

Hope to maybe dive down that way later in the year.

Alright all you Cornish spearo boys.
Stuckinsurrey and myself are on our way down tomorrow for a long weekend.
We will be staying on the lizard but can travel anywhere.
Do any of you know where we might find a few fish and at what state of the tide would be best to have a look?
Any info gratefully received.
Paul.

i'm around this weekend and live near the lizard, will send you a PM with my contact number.

I know this isnt the right place to advertise stuff but this might be of interest to someone on this thread

I'm selling my little 3.1m zodiac fastroller. Its the one with the rigid inflatable floor. Its a couple of years old in really good condition and comes with an old suzuki 8hp 2 stroke. The engine has never let me down.

Its a brilliant little spearing boat ideal for 1-2 people although we've dived 4 from it before but thats a bit cramped and you'll get some funny looks

Its super light weight i can carry it myself and put it on the car roof myself, the engine too is an easy 1 person carry. I leave in inflated and put it on the car roof but it will fold to the size of a big suitcase.

I'm not really using it this summer and i want the money for putting a larger boat in the harbour - (we're scaling up the nonsense! )
£800 on the best offer

anyone want it PM me or mail james.hills@kerrier.gov.uk

cheers guys
