Just lost a good friend a few weeks ago to drowning. Autopsy report came back 75% occlusion of one of his major arteries. 30-60% in the remaining ones. I pulled him out of 6 feet of water. He was not an aggressive diver at all. He was in his mid 50's and had just passed a stress test(go figure).

Wife and friend rotated through CPR with me (both of them actually with ER experience) for 30 minutes before medics got there in a helicopter. We were able to get color back to the body, but all blue from the neck up.

I don't want to believe this has actually happened, but it has and I'm trying to understand what happened. Any help would be most appreciated.

Jon made me think of where I was heading with this.... and that's what effect does the dive reflex have on the body's ability to remain conscious with compromised arterial bloodflow? I remember he was very cold most of the day.

Would induced bradycardia in this situation complicate the O2 supply to the brain?

First of all, I'm very sorry to hear of what happened. You have my sympathy.

I think the coronary artery disease may well have caused or been a major factor in the accident. It sounds like a very bad case of coronary occlusion.

Take care

Lucia
