Here are my specs:

Height: 5'6
Weight: 120 lbs.
I have an average strength level and am a new free diver. I'm a pretty fluent water-boy though. I recently purchased a new JBL 6' one piece aluminum polespear. I put a barbed paralyzer on it, but I think the pole might be too long for me.

I just fish for pretty small reef and sand-beach fish. Do you guys think I would be better off with a 5 footer? The 6' is just uncomfortable.....

Also, do you guys think this site is legit? vvvv

JBL 5 ft. Fixed Polespear without Tip (D60)

One more question... How do you extend the band on the back of the spear to make it weaker???

JBL spears are fine for starting out. In fact, you may never move away from them.

Size is more related to visibility and species of fish you hunt.
In clear water you typically need a longer spear, because you won't get as close to the fish. I use an 8' Gat-Ku and 7' and 8' home made 3-prong spears and hunt in visibility of 6' to an excess of 100' (only in hawaii)

divers hunting caves or in really bad vis need shorter spears.

You mentioned another reason for a shorter spear. You feel uncomfortable with the longer one. If you aren't comfortable with your equipment you will always be at a huge disadvantage in spearfishing.

Get the 5' spear and keep the 6'. As you get used to them you'll be able to make your own decision on which works better.
