CPR Method reconsidered

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
It could be that chest compressions yield some ventilation, but I'd like to see a dissertation that shows blood O2 or something. Anyone remember how to do arm-lift ventilation?
 
hah, Ive just had a CPR refreshment course yesterday.
They said the same.

The reason is that compressions help building blood pressure, thus moving it around the body and preventing brain demage.

Also, they said avoid mouth to mouth because the number one cause of death in the world is viral, and you dont know the persons medical history.

And the ratio of chest compressions to breaths has been increased to 30:2 in adults (from 15:2).

I did a first aid course a few weeks ago and they said the same. (Of course that is only if the person's heart has stopped!)
 
Chest compressions are important but don't skip the breaths. The idea to lower the breaths to compression ratio was done for several reasons first to make it easier for one person to do but the second reason is the most important. By giving those two breaths you oxygenate the blood and by giving the compressions you circulate it. They found that with 15 compressions you don't move the oxygenated blood very far so that's why you give 30 compressions now. It's better to move one series of oxygenated blood quickly through the body than to move smaller amounts more often. If you want to know more about it let me know.
 
You could probally use a snorkel to give rescue breaths, not totally safe but could lower your chance of infection by the patient. Unless they puke into it...

That'll happend if you dont keep the airways open and air goes into the victims stomach.
 
Actually if the airway is obstructed you won't be getting any air in. IMHO you get puking from over inflating the victim, still better to try and fail any thing helps a little.
 
Since this is my work, I feel that I have to give you my 5cents on this.

There are diffrent regulations between US and Europe, but Guidelines from American Heart Association (AHA) och European Resuscitation Council (ERC) are basicly the same. They are working side by side to improve the CPR so that more ppl will be given the best chanses to survive.

As mentioned its a ratio of 30 chestcompressions followed with 2 rescuebreaths. Do this for 1 min and the have another person to do this for one more minute befor cheking for a pulse or breathing. This is the best way to buy time for the brain and heart, if your alone it will not be as efficient but you will give the victim well needed help to respond well to defibrillation.
CPR buys time, and Defib, is what convert the heartrythm back to normal.

So sign up for a CPR class and practise often, since you skill depend on that...

The article says that only doing chest compressions and leaving out the rescue breaths may be the best way to save the victum from further brain damage.

This could also encourage more people to preform CPR on strangers because all you need to do is chest compressions.

I think I remember the no breath thing was only in the first 4 minutes of cardiac arrest (because there is still quite a bit of o2 in the blood). The current standard is 30 chest compressions followed with 2 rescue breaths - I hope if it’s me in arrest the person doing cpr didn’t read that article....
