might have a chance to visit Croatia in July or August, so keen as a bean I started checing out the status of freediving and spearfishing in the country (which is good it appears :t )

but I found this excerpt from a site about fishing laws:

The charges for spear-fishing are the same as for angling and fishing tackle. Spear-fishing gun can be used from dawn until sunset. It is strictly prohibited to use equipment which forces a person to stay in sea or under water against his or her will.

what the hell kind of equipment are they on about?? sounds nasty!

reminds me of the warning on a japanese product:

"Not to be used for the other use" :head

Rules are fairly simple.
Few years back a month spearing licence was about £70.
It is easier to obtain licence in the north of the country.
You would have to find bigger town to do so in the south of the country.
If you are caugth spearing without the licence, your gear is confiscated. I am not sure about penalty charges. It is possible to do it illegaly and many people do. Police checks are strict in national parks. In other areas not so strict. You cannot spear on scuba. You can spear only during the day.

I am not aware of angling charges...unless they introduced them very recently.

We have few members from Croatia here. They will be able to give you more up-to-date information. I am not sure where you got that sentence from, but it looks like bad translation to me.

Adriatic sea is not as rich with life as some other seas. It has been overfished in recent decades and recovery is very slow. You have to be really skilled, but hey...it is challange. :D
And it gets more difficult in the summer. :D
Dentex and sea bass are praised catch. Visibility is good ~ 20-30m.

I'll provide details tomorrow (today?). Right now, I'm quite sleepy :)

thanks for the info - if the fish are scarce then it'll b a good chance to practice freediving so every thorn has a rose or whatever that saying is. Talking about bad english , i found this the other day on an ad for mascara in Japan:

"Happy infinite romances occur in a newborn oasis. Wink your future!"

here's the proof
