Low mass projectiles and density of water at work here that makes slingshots and crossbows poor performers. If he had substituted a long shaft for the lead ball then the slingshot would have worked better, but flat bands too weak as they lack cross-sectional area. The expellable gas scuba pistol will be illegal in all but a few countries, but interesting design none the less. Hydrodynamic drag works on the crossbow limbs and slows then down and kills the shooting performance.
