For the last year or so, my son had been going to a gym in Laguna Beach that uses the Crossfit training system. You don't work out for all that long each day, but you work your ass off, and the emphasis is on functional fitness.
Last year he entered a Navy SEAL Challenge thing up at UCLA, and while he made the cutoff required for entry into SEAL training, he didn't get the Blue T-shirt for the higher level of performance. So today he was in Phoenix trying again and seeing if Crossfit made a difference, and it did. He got the Blue shirt.
The events and minimum times/repetitions are as follows:
500 meter breast stroke in 10 minutes. He did 7+.
80 bent knee situps in 2 minutes. He did 90.
80 pushups in 2 minutes. He did 94.
11 pullups from a dead hang. He did 20.
1.5 mile run in 10 minutes. He did 9:32.
I'm kind of proud of him. Not bad for a guy who is about to turn 46.
