Hello fellow oceaners. I am trying to buy a boat to line dive, and spearfish here in Florida. I had an idea, and that was to see if I could crowdfund this project. I hope you can spare some change for my idea. I will be blogging and updating this project as it unfolds! The goal is to get a boat, trailer and a van to run dives from on the east and west coast of fl. I will also be completing my PFI instructor rating ASAP to facilitate lessons and training. Wish me luck in this endeavor! Please donate, or more importantly spread the word about this idea all via your Facebook and Twitter friends and followers. I will report the progress of this mission.
Thank you-
Ian

Hi Ian, so these are donations rather than investments? I thought the idea of crowd-funding was to provide investors with incentives to invest, rather than to just request donations for, what...an unregistered charity/personal benevolent fund? Or am I reading this wrong?

I wish you luck starting up your freediving business/hobby - not so sure about the funding method but if folk are generous/daft/foresightful (delete as appropriate) enough to help you, well done in taking the initiative & pulling it off! I guess it is more direct, honest & efficient than any number of "government sponsored" (i.e. taxpayer funded) sport/business initiatives. And if you provide a service to others, are usefully employed & pay your taxes - perhaps that is the benefit for the wider community.

Thanks you Mr. X. It was really just a passing thought, hope, that I decided to give a try. (The crowd funding that is) I feel like I have not acted on many entrepreneurial ideas in my past, and these later have proven out. I am just testing an idea that we can spread this so easily thru social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, reach so many people so easily via an exponential multiplying of networks, that donations of $1 or even 0.50$ could easily raise large sums of money. It at least has me thinking about philosophical/existential topics since it inception, so for me it is already worth the effort. Most surprisingly I have been met with much negativity in this endeavor, but even hat has taught me some interesting lessons :). Thanks everyone. If your feel like it, please share this link (a very free and simple altruistic action) Facebook via the following link: www.gofundme.com/internetmagicboat

If your feeling spunky or particularly idealistic/generous, throw a $1 donation.
Thanks again-
Captain of bad ideas,
Ian

I have a 22 foot boat and I think I have probably taken out far more people and introduced them to spearfishing than anyone else I know of. I just didn't realize that this qualified me for charity.

If I had a 44 foot boat, I'm quite sure I would take more than twice as many people out, so please chip in and help me buy a boat.

Hmmm. Come to think of it, I couldn't afford the fuel and maintenance for a 44 foot boat even if it were given to me. Should I just ask "investors" to throw in something extra, or should I start a separate crowd funding project to cover that.?

I only wish my father were still alive. He brought me up to think I had to earn the things that I acquired. I'd like to show him what an antiquated notion that was.

Sounds like you'll need a Crowd Funded gas fund Bill! :D

One of those Fibretech C-Ski spearo boats with a couple of fancy big engines would be nice - now where are those Crowd Funding websites?! ;)

Not much different to some of the registered charities in the UK & USA from what I hear - they have become a popular way to avoid tax.

The best charities are the ones incorperated in other countries then they actually operate out of. Realy avoid taxes and legal problems when the numbers don't add up...
