I was just reading some of the hilarious posts on the Sex thread and it struck me that it would be great to dive with the lot of you.

So here's an idea that's been banging around in my head for a while:

--Let's have a deeperblue event every year where those of us who can make it all meet up, sort of like what's been happening in the keys and in California, dive and exchange funny stories, training tips and gear.

We can dedicate a statue of Anderson with his hand down his wetsuit, carved by the great Michelangelinininio. :D

And other fun stuff.....

I think it would be great to meet up at someone's favourite dive site every year and get the royal treatment. One year it could be the keys, the next Vancouver, Kona, California, Great Lakes, Cuba, Cayman, etc....

We could have friendly competitions, perhaps try out some of the new events discussed in the Freediving Olympics thread I started.

Deeperblue might be able to facilitate mini-clinics, demonstrations, and talks (marine ecology, research, etc). I for one would gladly give a monofin clinic.

Think of the fun! :D

(only one week left until I leave the Yukon and rejoin my pod in Vancouver!)

So I'm feeling a little emotive....

That would be nice, wouldn't it? Tell you the truth, as much as I like competing, the best part of it is meeting other divers. You can count me in, as long as the logistics ($$) are right at the time. We should consider a year's notice, so people can get holidays and money together, etc. How about Bali....close to my new home ;)
So, you're counting the days, huh? I'm counting, too.... 22 days 'til I get to put on a gown and a stupid hat, and collect my sheepskin. Who'd a thought an ex-drunken metal drummer could do it?
I'm coming to Vancouver at least a week before Nationals, I'm going to try and post a 50/50/50 point game.....we should train together, yes?
Cheers,
Erik Y.

funny you should mention this...

It's an excellent idea and your not the only one to thing about it.

Sven emailed me about having a Deeper Blue orientated "Meet & Dive" type event. He's already suggesting a location for the first one.

I'm looking at getting a banner created for our official on-site coverage of World Events, however Sven is looking to champion the idea of getting a Banner created to be shipped out to these Member events and have everyone pose in front of it for group photo's (which i'm surprised Anderson didn't get one done from his keys kraze!). We'd ask everyone to chip in to pay for this one if possible.

What I need is people to approach me with ideas on how to organise this and i'll get the team involved with getting some special events being sorted out. I think one a year to begin with is a good, with it changing location every year. You never know, I might even get on a plane to come to one of these things as well

Let's hear some more ideas and details. We need an official bid for the Deeper Blue "Meet and Dive" 2002, Sven already has started his bid - who else?

deeper blue keys kraze

all the group photos had too many beer bottles in them. :D didn't think db would be too happy about having their name associated with a trip that had 3 members go through a few dozen cases of corona extra! :p

but,.... next year (last week in march) we'll have it officially pseudo-sponsored by deeperblue. the place and time is excellent. we're good friends with the owner of knights key campground and it's more than affordable if you like to camp. there's also condos right next door for about $800/week. flying into fort lauderdale is a cheap hub, and we could figure out how to shuffle everyone down there via busses or whatever.

obviously, the diving's great. water temp was 77F for us. that's the last weekend of lobster season, and the weekdays are not busy at all. there are boat rentals available at decent rates a block away from the site, too.

although this was primarily a spearfishing trip, i know you freedivers would like swimming with/in/and around all the marine life down there. there are quite a few protected reefs. there's a deep wreck, deep bridge rubble, and plenty of open blue water.

plus, you'd be able to gorge yourself on the catch we come back with. lord knows we had enough to feed an army. :D

later everyone,
anderson

Good Idea

I like the idea of the 'meet and dive.' I think we need to choose the location carefully.

Unfortunately my experience in Florida last year was the worst of my short diving career; I mean no offense to anyone who lives there. If there is a time of year in Florida when there is deep water right off shore, the water is flat, no strange deep currents, no sea lice, and clean air in the city, I'll come for sure!

I think the most important point about the location is to find somewhere with deep water right off shore, to minimize boat costs, not to mention that I don't like boats in general.

eric,

the only problem is that our continental shelf extends out quite far, even in lauderdale. so i think the boats might be inevitable. you would love some of the wrecks down where we go. about 35m to the bottom with beautifully monstrous jewfish patrolling the hull and big amberjacks and other pelagics doing laps around some of the masts that come up to 17m from the surface. you can plan the dive where currents are the calmest, too.

maybe we can send you down with a gun to get some of those huge mutton snapper that inhabit the infamous 30 fathom areas? ;)

...and where there are lots of groupies to help me with my suit, hold an awning over me, rub my feet, carry my gear, buy me dinner, tell me how great I am, clean my fish, put a mint on my pillow...Short of my bathtub, I'd say you're screwed pal! :hmm

We here on the Northern Left coast are fortunate in that regard- having relatively deep, OK damn deep water, fairly close off the beach, which you know presents it's own problems. Anderson's going to get a first hand the end of April, the invite is open so consider coming down.

I had the opportunity to do some dives up in the Victoria area and outer islands and other than the cold water, fog, beaches that were too sandy, limited and dark viz, huge tides and all, I had a damn good time. You guys are walking around with some of God's greatest attempts at beautiful ladies. :inlove

We found the spot almost 30 years ago. They opened the airport here. When it came to "going someplace warm to die", like Robert Redford said in the spy movie, it was a no brainer (fortunately).

Sven, if the keepers of the site will allow crass commercialism, let me recommend the book my wife has been working on for a long time. 'How to do Hawaii on only $1500 a day'. It lists four or five places that meet your requirements. Available in 2012, maybe.

After a few hours yesterday with the fish stickers and never going below 20 meters, I'll try a little deeper with the apnea crowd today. The viz is only 100 feet and the temp a bone chilling 75F but the new suit'll help.

I'm outa here.

Ahh, the calm and soothing reports from you Bill serve to remind me that there are newer and bluer vistas.

And that I missed the boat.
