What reputation part about? I mean, what is the protocol/etiquette for hitting it? I used it just to see what it did once, but I've had some given to me, but I'm not sure on proper usage. Am I expected to return the gesture? Because I can't see a one word, thanks as worthwhile.

I just don't want to insult someone by not replying.

Giving back reputation without a reason is neither expected nor desired. You should give reputation at posts that you consider exceptional contributions, or to people that are great asset to the community proving that with their multiple posts.
