At the last saltFree meet we were discussing whether it would be useful to introduce depth taps. A number of the freedivers prefer to close their eyes during their dive and so periodically crash into the bottom plate. Usually when their dive is going smoothly, easy equalisation, solid speed, fast glide and the target depth is reached sooner than anticipated.
The Angels could easily warn the freediver of the approaching target depth and plate by tapping maybe 3 or 4 times using metal bang sticks. In fact we could tap at any depth increment, say every 10 meters, depending on the depths involved and the number of support divers covering that particular session.
The benefits are obvious. The downside is that during competitive events it's unlikely this will be replicated, not so good if you become too accustomed to the taps.
We'll happily incorporate taps if anyone would like us to.
Comments welcomed.
