Hi All,

Just wanted to introduce myself to the forum and look for some fellow local spearos!

My name is Mike, I am 27 and have recently moved to Exeter. I am studying for a PhD in jellyfish biology and ecology in Plymouth.

After doing lots of reading online I have just recently bought my spearo equipment. The gun I bought is a 75cm Cressi Geronimo. Although one of my friends had recommended a slightly longer gun (he is French) I decided on the 75cm as it sounds like a good all round size, especially when the viz is poor.

I have experience with SCUBA and general snorkelling, but have only just started spearfishing. I want to be able to catch nice fresh fish for my girlfriend and I in a sustainable and respectful manner. And also to enjoy being underwater as much as humanly possible.

I have an Italian friend, Mario, who also lives in Exeter and he is also keen to go spearfishing. Mario has experience spearfishing, unlike me.

Yesterday we went to Babbacombe and had a few hours spearfishing in the evening. Although the viz was pretty poor we had a great time. I managed to spear a small (~30cm - just!) Pollack and Mario took a nice spider crab. I fired the gun once (for the first time) and speared a fish, so I was pleased, despite its size and it having probably not yet reproduced :(

If there are any local guys who are up for meeting up and going spearfishing with Mario and I, let me know! Plus if you guys have any local knowledge that you are willing to share we would be real pleased!
In exchange I can offer knowledge of local jellyfish species and Mario could help with anything global business frugal innovation related!!

Sorry for such a long first post!

Cheers!

Mike

hi i started spearfishing about 8 months ago with two mates we live in plymouth/ ivybridge and fish in plym thurlestone torbay and any where else we can we would be up for meeting up

Hey aliwag.

Great to hear there are some people keen to meet up.

Mario and I have been out in Babbacombe a few times and took a few nice sized Pollack and the odd Mullet. Last weekend we went to Shaldon and had a really good day - I took 3 nice Seabass, a nice mullet and pollack. Shaldon has been the best day we have had so far.

I work everyday in Plymouth so would be up for going local to Plymouth - I can take my gear to work and hopefully borrow some weight from work too (not too keen on carrying that on the train...again!).

Mario is away for a few weeks but I am available most of the time. Let me know when you guys have a session planned. I would be really keen to join you and your pals.

Cheers mate,

Mike

Hi Mike,
I've tried Shaldon too, its a great spot but watch out for the Bass fisherman. If you stray anywhere near the estuary itself they will kick up a fuss. I went in from the beach where you walk down through the tunnel and went left but got dragged round into the river mouth with the incoming tide and got shouted at, but fair enough you're not allowed in rivers of course even tho it's always debatable (tho I'm sure someone will put me straight) where fresh water starts. The fin back round the point against that tide was tough going though.
Make sure you give Ladram Bay a look, the fauna and flora is unbelievably beautiful and different to anything I've seen down that coast. Exmouth is also supposed to be good and I think the Devon spearo club holds the occasional competition there. I think there are some nice reefs at the far end of Sandy Bay.
Regards

Hi artiz,

Thanks for the tips. I will be sure to try out those spots. I too have heard that Exmouth is supposed to be good, especially for Bass.

It is a tricky situation with the fishermen. Seems unfair that they think they have dibs on the Bass! I think I would be tempted to tell them where to go, but I am not local and from my surfing - always respect the locals... I will remember to steer clear of the estuary.

We too fished the point on the left as you come out the tunnel. Was great.
We hit the spot at bang on high tide and were in the water for about 3h. Luckily the tide didn't really effect us.

The Devon spearfishing club seems pretty inactive...?

Let us know if you fancy meeting up for a session sometime!

Cheers,

Mike

Hey aliwag,

I haven't been out in the sound, no. I would like to try Bovisand and Wembury they should be good.

Lets organise a night some time. I am away next week though. Maybe the week after?

Guys you are in the wrong thread. Go to ' Uk and Ireland' section, then find the South Devon thread, there are loads of us about. My crew 'The Usual Suspects' meet out of BudleighBudleigh/Exmouth regularly.
