Hello i was wondering what are the disadvantages of using a Scuba wetsuit for spearfishing? i was planning on buying a 5mm scuba wetsuit for the winter and a nice one for the summer.

thanks

Here in the UK the main disadvantage would be cold; Scuba wetsuits have more points of entry for water (i.e. zips) and therefore you will get colder much more quickly with this type of suit versus a 'freediving' suit.

Hiya

I started out with a scuba wetsuit. The dive shop promised me it was one of the best wetsuits they had. Worked well. Kept me warm and was very tough, with-standing cuts and abrasions. Putting it one and taking it off was a bit of a chore though. My biggest gripe was that my legs would get chaffed raw on the area's behind my knees and that i would get colder much quicker than one of my buddies that had a open cell spearfishing wetsuit.

I ended up buying a open cell wetsuit and what a difference!! Much softer and supple, not so stiff like my scuba wetsuit. Easy to put on and take off. I can almost liken it to putting on clothes. Its that easy!! Kept me MUCH warmer and NO MORE chaffe-ing!! Since you're a spearo, you'll also need a loading pad on your chest. Most spearing wetsuits have them, whilst scuba suits don't.

If you can afford a open cell wetsuit, BUY IT!! It is much more fragile than a scuba suit, but you soon enough learn to be a bit careful. My Omer Ocean Mimetic 5mm is now more than 3years old, and has been used HARD and is still in good nick. The neoprene has abviously compressed and its more like a 3mm wetsuit now, but, its still in great shape!!

Regards
