I don't know if there is anyone that is interested, but if you click on "Dive Profiles WC" at www.ApneaMania.com, you find some nice profiles from some of the dives from the World Championship 2005 in Villefranche.

she actually reduces speed on the ascent!!, for a finswimmer you'd think it would be the opposite
 
Very intereting profile for Natalia.

Also I find it interesting that guys going to 80-90 spend up to a minute less under water than guys going to 96-107. Seems out of propotion, then again, these are guys diving to 100+, propably they know something I don't...
 
yes, i noticed that the deepest guys are diving relatively slowly...
IF i could do 100m, my dive time (scaled up) would be about 3mins dead.
maybe you need to take it steadier to reach those monster 100m+ depths.
 
also, notice how Guillaume's profile is almost identical to Carlos' profile... interesting.
 
What depth did Martin do? It looks like he turned at 97m. Did he get the tag?

Guillaume has clearly DRASTICALLY slowed down his diving from the old days. Carlos, on the other hand, has sped up (previous 102m WR in 3'56").

Looks like Carlos starts sinking around 42m, same with Nery.

I speculate that this "slowing down" is one of the main reasons for better equalization and less lung squeeze cases. Also, work on the way down is more aerobic, so if you work less on the way down there's more O2 to keep conscious on the way up when you are hopfully working anaerobic due to the dive response (if to apply Murat's method on normal CB).

Taking slowness to extreme, it took herbert 1 minute to get to 45 meters, while most of the other divers were around 60 (for slow divers) and 80 (for fast divers). Maybe that might have made the difference between a WR and a BO?
I hope Herbert could respond to that...

Observations,
Natalia took 2'10" to return from 86m. That is a 0.66m/s ascent. Some no-fins divers go 50% faster. Also it looks like she started to sink faster after she stopped finning during the descent. Maybe she was very very heavily weighted? Interesting to note she had the longest dive out of men and women that didn't finish in a blackout.
Umberto's time for 98m was between 2'10" - 2'20" (can't remember exactly), which is a huge difference to Carlos et al. He has never had any problems with lung squeeze, so this may be a factor.
Coste and Nery's profiles would seem inefficient (slow freefalls indicate overbuoyancy or un-hydrodynamic body position), but you can't argue with the depths they're reaching...
 
Also I am very surprised that with these ridiculously long dive times (and bottom times: Herbert's 6-7" at 107m!!) and cold bottom temperatures, there were no incidences of CO2 or N2 narcosis.
 
I read on the Austria site that Herbert spent so much time on the bottom trying to find his tag, because there was a huge stack of missed tags. He couldn't find his tag so he took Martin's 100m tag.

I personally follow a similar profile as the deep guys, desent at 0.8m/s, and faster ascent. It often takes me 60 seconds to reach 40m.

Some of the divers may be experiencing severe N2/CO2 narcosis, but perhaps it just didn't result in a deep BO.
 
86-0 in 2'10"?! i've gone from 0-75-0 in that time!

i once discovered that i sank faster when i actually stopped finning. at the time i thought my gentle finning around 30m was necessary and efficient, but in actual fact i was burning up O2 and slowing myself down in the process.... doh
 
What depth did Mandy make? It looks like 75m from the graph. Why is the graph cut off on the right?

This is cool to see the profiles of all the dives.

The thing with Natalia's and Mandy's graph is that the D9 was on 20 sec sample mode. (on the computer Mandy did 81.1 and Natalia 88.2... and Herbert 106.9, Carlos 104.2, Nery 102.7)

Natalia's dive was so much slower than anticipated, that apparently the counterweight was deployed for the period where she was ascending but out of visual contact. So the line was moving upward for a period. It wouldn't have had any effect on her upward speed though, as the Karabiner on her lanyard is absolutely massive.
 
I would be really interested to know if she had planned the dive so long or did something happen along the way (narked?)...

I guess in the future in competitions, it would be nice if the competitors could roughly announce the time they're going to spend under and if they're out of sight in let's say t+15 sec, the counter weight would be deployed...Just a thought.

I guess anyone training to such depths would have enough experience to roughly know how long it's going to take...
