Hey Cigar lung

I have been to Costa Rica twice. Both times I went on a live aboard and took the 30 hour boat ride to Coco's Island. The diving there is some of the best in the world. Vis was good at around 80 feet. I saw manta's, hammer heads, tuna's, dolphins and tons of other fish. When they say shark infested water they aren't kidding. I saw no less that 50 sharks on every dive. Mostly white tip sharks, which are very docile. The vis near the coast line was much less, especially during the rainy season. They have a lot of muddy runoff from the rivers. I think it runs somewhere in the 30 to 40 foot max on the vis. You can still see lots of sharks near the coast though including bull sharks.

Above the water, I would recommend visiting the volcano "Arenal" It is active and if the weather is right and not to cloudy, you can watch the thing erupt. There is also a place where a river that runs from the volcano is steaming hot. You can sit in a waterfall that runs around 95 degrees. They had a swimming pool next to the steaming river and had the water funneled into it. Very nice to relax in the hot pool with frosty cold beverage. It was also a nice place to get a massage. They do a nice eco tour which you can do on 4-wheelers or take a zip line through the trees. Very cool. People were friendly. It seemed very safe there. Hope that help, enjoy your trip.
