Anybody know of any good places in Asia to learn about diving (ie, pearl diving) history? I undertand it's a long tradition in Okinawa, Sri Lanka, maybe Indonesia. Does anybody have any specific info they could share?

I have experience of pearl diving in the cook islands (have a few black pearls myself :), but cannot really advice you on the places you mention.
But I want to mention that recently there has been a thread on the apnea academy forum Tappanaso... with a guy showing pictures of traditional freediving in sri lanka. Maybe you can write him. AA has also an english forum here: General discussion (English only)

good luck!

Hi nvfone,

Are you interested in just pearl diving, or ethnic groups with a culture of freediving?

Various polynesian islands, in particular Tahiti, have long traditions of pearl diving.

The Polynesians also gave us the word Taravana that we use for freediving decompression sickness, which E.R. Cross, the famous navy diver publicized after living with pearl divers and studying their physiology in Tuamotu.

There are also the freediving cultures such as the Bajau, Orang Laut, Moken that live on coastlands around South-East Asia (Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand)

There are also the Sea-Women cultures: the Ama of Japan and Haenyo of Korea.

There's lots of info out there, depending on your interest . . .
