I'm new to spearfishing, so new I still haven't done any but I fancy myself a bit of a handyman and I'm waiting for the water here to warm up, so i decided to build a polespear and save a little money for the rest of my gear.

I went with 14mm OD 8mm ID alu tube for the body, with 10mm alu round bar for the joints and a little 10mm OD 6mm (bought thinking it would have 1.5mm walls rather than 2) ID tube to get a snug fit around the 7mm stainless spear point with a little sanding.

90 inches overall and weighs 1lb 8oz

that looks like good workmanship but you might get problems with corrosion having steel and aluminium touching. with maintenance it might be ok.

cheers, yeah i wondered about bimetallic corrosion, was thinking about just using a bit of PTFE tape on the stainless threads or maybe some blue loctite, and some electrical tape where it touches at the front.

My guess is that rinsing it off with freshwater after each diving day will control it for quite a while. The corrosion will get to it eventually, but all gear wears out after a while. Let us know how swell it works.

I've been toying with the idea of making one myself, but would it be better to just buy one since I'm just starting out?
