I've recently started training DNF and having never been a swimmer, I'm faced with a serious technique learning curve. I've got some questions for freedivers with good DNF style:

What is your DNF PB?
What is your arms only DNF PB?
What is your legs only DNF PB?

What provides you with more momentum, leg or arm strokes?

It's been a while since I did a long no fins dive, but something like 155 DNF, 130 legs only. Never did a max arms only, but it would be quite a bit less.

Streamline and glide is the important thing. Your arms give you more thrust, but put you in an unstreamlined position after the stroke.

Hi,
My monofins are in a need of a repair, so Im training DNF for the time beeing as well..

DNF pb 135m. (dive time 2:47). 110m DNF last week (2:15 - in a 50m pool). With arms and legs only I have only done 50´s but I second Crismars opnion. Legs only is better, than arms only. I have 3 leg strokes on 25m (legs only).

True arms give you more thrust but because of the unstremlined position i get more meters out out the legs as long as your arms have fully returned to streamlined position.

I'm not sure that arms would give you more power than legs. They might just appear to, since you always start the arm stroke while you're still carrying a bit of speed from the kick. Then the legs have to deal with drag you incur on the recovery too...

I wonder if all these figures are fully weighted and suited?

If you are training with just speedos and a mask, what would these reduce to? My present goal is 75m like that, almost there. I can only take about 30% lung to do that, any more and I bob up. Also, I am using about 7 strokes per 25M. Awful, but it's where I'm at, if that helps.

It's unlikely many people's PBs will have been set without weights, since DNF is so dependent on weighting and exhaling reduces performance.

True Dave, and it's not my PB. I am trying to figure out what % worse (or harder) it may be so equipped.

I have been going to the pool on my bike at lunch times for a quick 1 hr session, and lugging a suit and lead around is not fun.

Has anyone who has good suited and weighted PB's tried just with speedos? How did you find it?

Awful. I have very dense legs, so on inhale my body position is so bad I'm better off on exhale. Even then, I use 2-3x as many strokes just due to weighting and body position.

Never tried a max, nor do I intend to.

I have never tried arms or legs only. I like arms and legs together. Some times I feel like arms are more powerfull than legs, sometimes vica versa. When I try only arms or legs it makes the same number of stroke/kicks. I train what seems less developed in time :). My PB is 170. Hope I will improve it this year ;-)

In the beginning of my training it seemed to me that arms only are more powerful then legs only, but with improving technique it comes to equal speed and stroke count. Just legs only feels more relaxing due to more streamlined body position during the dive. But as mentioned from others, there are many variables as body constitution, balancing etc...
Arms and legs PB 75( but, to be honest, it is only real PB, arms and legs only weren't done in PB attempts, just in training sessions when i felt very relaxed and good during dives)
Just arms PB 65
Just legs PB 70
Just my 2 cents

Well about suits, and weighting and gliding... my pb with just speedos is 175m (and that was without pushing for it) and my pb with fast skin is 200m, I have more or less the same speed both ways, lets say I am 5-7sec slower per 100m with speedos. Never try it in neoprene suit do...
