DNF help

I've started doing dnfs in a 25m pool.

I can do 25m every time, but I really have to overcome the strong psychological urge to just stop there instead of turning around.
My max has been a 50m.

I'm pretty sure I'm not using the proper technique. Im swimming hard and quickly, not gliding like I saw in some of the movie clips on DB. When I try to take it slow and calm, I end up floating up (no weights) and I feel like it takes too long. I can't even do 25m like that.


Also, if i can comfortably do a 25m dnf and strain to do a 40-50m, approx. how deep will I be able to safely go with fins? 10m? 15?

any help and/or tips are appreciateld

p.s. I'm off to the pool now. just got my ipod's waterproof casing. should make laps a lot more interesting. :)
 
A neckweight will make a huge difference to your glide, comfort and distance. Dynamic nofins is only fun without one if you do it FRC so that you are neutrally bouyant. Goodluck with your training
 
I have come to like swimming across in the deep end of the pool (4m) for that same reason: The increased water pressure puts me in (almost) neutral bouyancy, which makes the underwater swimming much nicer. AND making a turn every 12m or so takes away the 'psychological issues' of the turn, that you mention.

I usually do a set of 15x3, each dive lasting around 1:10.

You need a neck weight. Easy to say, hard to find one, in fact you better make one for yourself. I made mine out of a bike tyre, 2-3kg of lead (buy 1 or 2 small sacks of scuba diving weights that have inside these tiny lead spheres) and an easy to open/close buckle. With the neck weight in place you should be neutral and then you will find the gliding a breeze and very very fun!

It may also help you to train in a 50m pool if you have access to one, this way you are not having hte mental stress of turning at 25m - i know it from own experience! Now i have the same problem at 50m turn in the big pool but aint no 100m pool around! :)

Hm, for me is more difficult to do DNF in 50m pool then when I do it in 25m. I use the pushing off the side to get more glide on way back and thus it's easier. I don't use neck weights but really try to do as long strokes as possible and wait until I almost stop gliding and then stroke again. In 50m pool I do usually about 14 strokes to make it.
Problem is that I do it in normal pool's open hours and sometimes get a kick from swimmers above me. :D Not so deep pool, you know.
