Hi all,

I am trying out some footpockets, I am getting real apnea/spearfishing fins finally. I currently have "long" snorkeling fins (Beuchat). I tried the footpocket and compared it with my current fins and I have a question, should the tips of the toes poke out a little? They didn't pock out at all in my snorkeling fins. Here is a picture of both:

The one on the left on this next picture is the same as the one on the left on the previous picture, but with a sock. Please ignore the footpocket on the right as it is the same footpocket as the one on the left but a smaller size:

Thanks,

OK...this is going to sound weird...I like to see my toes a bit. I have toes out on all my fins (4 pair) just a bit...maybe a cm? I have not perceived any difference in performance or usability...but it all comes down to comfort and each manufacturer's design. I think that the pocket is supposed to give a little room...say a 43-44 size...so some users will have toes out, some will have toes covered...but as long as the contact areas on the top and sides of the foot are comfortable and don't chafe, then I don't see a problem.

Thanks John, it doesn't sound wierd to me.

I had a doubt about the size. It feels fine/snug with the socks on and a bit big without them (the smaller size is definitely too small with the sock, it cuts the blood flow). But this toe thing worried me :) .

I agree, nothing to worry about. Foot pocket toe openings vary from design to design and if the top of the foot pocket ends almost above the end of the toe platform (e.g. [1] below) you're likely to see much less toe than when the top of the foot pocket ends some way short of the end of toe platform (e.g. [2] below):

What is not acceptable is when the toes protrude so far out of the foot pocket that they extend into the blade area, creating a lever that may be painful on the foot and eventually damaging to the foot pocket if a tear develops at the toe opening.

What may reveal what is actually happening with your two pairs of fins is the length of each model's footspace. We all select fins using the shoe sizes printed on them as a guide, but fins embossed with the same shoe size range, say EU 44-46, don't always have the same foot space length. I have quite a small collection of fins, all designed for my EU 46 feet, but their footspace lengths vary between 26 and 29 cm, which is quite a difference. The fins with 26 cm footspace leave my toes protruding quite a way beyond the opening, while the 29 cm ones conceal the toes completely. This is why I wish fin manufacturers followed German Standard DIN 7876 and embossed their fins with the maximum length and breadth of the footspace within the foot pocket, as here:

FL (Fußlänge, or foot length) is 255 mm, while FB (Fußbreite, or foot width) is 95 mm. Why don't all full foot fins come with this useful information, I wonder?

Thanks for the info, I agree, they should as it would make everyone's life easier and would allow people to buy their products online with less worry.
