i know kitty.. never thought to ask her.. mm good idea.. man i hope i can find that suit.. maybe i can get my rubber friend to make me one out of silicone. he knows where to get silicone sheeting hmm.. :hmm

Perhaps Elios could make you a nice high-performance mer-suit. :p
You'd be the talk of Atlantis.

i'd like a smoothskin one.

hehe the talk of atlantis.. i'd be the cat's meow (or would it be the catfish's meow)..lol

The folks at foxmoonproductions.com used to have neoprene tails. They might be able to point you in some direction.

hey selkie.. that's a really good idea. i met her at a mermaid message board that i frequent from time to time.

hadn't thought about asking her. i did ask a friend of mine that is a rubber fashion designer. he said he can try to make one for me out of a silicone material.

that would be cool too.

It is a wetsuit, made from 3mm neoprene, one piece from neck to the trailing edge of the fin. Zipper was on the back. The suit covers the fin, and a 1" wide velcro strip closes the suit at the trailing edge of the fin. 3 lbs of lead strip screwed to the monofin compensates for the buoyancy of the neoprene covering the fin. It is recommended to use a monofin with foot pockets very close together, otherwise the tail looks too wide below the knees. Alternatively, a pair of bi-fins mounted side-by-side works, too. Any halfway competent local custom wetsuit shop should be able to make a similar suit by modifying the pattern of a standard one-piece wetsuit. Cost should be a few hundred dollars, plus fin. Good luck, let us know if you getting yourself such a mermaid wetsuit !

wow thanks! i'll definitely check out a place near me that sells wetsuits. i'll see if they also make custom ones.

that's such a great suit. plus their dive excursions look fun too.

thanks for the insight!

Actually, that company doesn't run dive excursions, they just rent big sailboats (bareboats).
The best way to don a tank in a mermaid suit is to suspend the tank from the boat with a lenth of line, jump in the water and then put on the tank harness in the water. There is no need for a BC, since the monofin creates so much thrust. Getting back on the boat with a tail is not difficult, either. Alternatively, it is possible to remove the suit in the water.
I wonder how big the market for mermaid suits for lady divers really is ?!

Hi,

I don't mean to be sending advertisement spams, but I was searching on Yahoo for mermaid suits, to see where we ended up on the list. Your discussion was amongst the list and I thought you'd like to know that we made the mermaid suits in that nsyv website that you posted.

If it's not appropriate to respond to such an inquiry, please let me know as I just joined the list. If you want more information, please feel free to contact me.

Have a great day,

Cricket

Fitting you for this suit would be very tricky, seeing as it's going to be a mono-suit based on a generic pattern. Probably at least 35 measurements.

The neoprene tail (3mm) is stiffened by an EVA sheet that does contain integrated lead weights to achieve neutral buoyancy.

I find the suit reasonably attractive, but our airbrushing department would have a really good time putting details on the suit to make it more "mermaid" like....for example scales would probably look nice.

A BCD is definitely recommended under SCUBA conditions.

Cost: $300 - 400, with airbrushing $500

Hope this helps www.ultimatewetsuits.com

Hallo, can you please check the URL (ultimatewetsuits.com) ? The URL doesn;t seem to exist. I am curious to see your design.

I strongly (!!!) recommend against using a BC with a mermaid wetsuit. This recommendation is based on accompanying three scuba mermaids during more than 100 open ocean dives, some of these down to 110', in currents and all kinds of conditions. It is not needed with the power of a monofin, interferes with the undulating swim style required in a mermaid suit and doesn't look very pretty...
But I do recommend that scuba mermaids do wear rubber gloves. When maneuvering in tight corners, a mermaid may need to use her hands more than a bi-fin diver, and she is more likely to touch the bottom, rocks etc.

Would appreciate that whatever information is available about thread #18 would be posted in this forum, along with photos. Is there any video footage from this project? ... klausknarf

RE thread #15: (quote) "I wonder how big the market for mermaid suits for lady divers really is?!" ... (response) ... If you consider how popular and practical monofin diving is, then the next step from monofin diving is the mermaid (monofin) wetsuit. A healthy male using 2 conventional bi-fins can swim at the speed of roughly 2 knots underwater. The same man using a monofin can attain 6 to 7 knots underwater, often with much less effort than when using bi-fins. Now consider how useful a mermaid wetsuit would be for a woman whose legs have been weakened by illness. When diving in a mermaid wetsuit, she just has to move her legs a little bit, and the powerful thrust of the monofin would give her the momentum she needs using much less effort than with bi-fins. If diving in the suit is beneficial for the infirm woman, consider how much more its use could help a healthy woman. The tripling of swimming speed with a lot less effort makes it practical enough to outweigh the difficulty the woman would have walking aboard the diveboat; a pair of crutches would remedy that problem. Does its practicality outweigh its drawbacks? You decide. ... (Just a personal observation) ... Klausknarf
