Does fitness benefit STA or no?

I've been thinking about it in two sides for a long time. On one hand more muscles means more blood so that we carry more oxygen, but on the other hand, we consume more oxygen through them.
Is there a clear answer or do we have to find a balance?
 
Apnea is one of the few sports where you can be horribly out of shape and still be competitive. I have a hard time trying to come up with another sport where you try to do as little as possible. Playing chess vs static apnea, chess burns more calories!

My guess is that oxygen stored by added muscle will be balanced out by their base caloric requirement. I think your biggest gains are to be found in the mental part (relax harder!!>)
 
Ask yourself this, do you know any professional apnea athletes that are out of shape? You don't need to pass the Navy SEAL fitness test, but you do need to be thin and athletic.

No I don't know of any. Buy that doesn't surprise me. Freedivers are people who are very aware of their body and mind, so they take care of themselves.
But the OP question was about static apnea, for which you would not need to have any fitness, at least in theory.
