Managed to get in Sunday morning for a couple of hours. Spent half that time looking for a flattie with similar success to glowworm. I've only seen one plaice about two months ago, I don't think any of my spearing friends have had any more success this year.

Don't give up on the pier - great spot...the bass are deep inside the structure and the anglers can't get 'em like we can...:martialgo very early or late to avoid scuba-toting fish-huggers - they are the main obstacle to diving there. Don't worry about the boats or danglers as all the action is deep under the pier out of their reach...hug the rock wall until you reach the pier (good bass to be had there too) and then keep underneath it. Don't take a float, for obvious reasons...
Also that whole area is very tide / time dependent as suggested. Very busy with anglers / boats / grockels in the day time all summer. Best fish at dusk when the water is quiet on a high tide...the higher the better...early / late season are great too.
Just to stress again, watch the current at Peveril as it can whisk you out to St.Alban's race in no time on the ebb. This also applies to the whole of Durlston Bay outside of an imaginary line running from Peveril to the headland due south...
Shame about the flatty bashing, Glowworm - if it makes you feel any better, I haven't seen a flatty since last year!
Viz in Poole bay is looking a lot better at the moment from the run of North winds. Hengistbury and the piers are diveable...
Just like to say thanks again to Bryn and Podge for facilitating a great 'day/night experience' on Saturday at Vobster and the campsite/pub! All in all good fun and obviously with us all doing some decent depths, very rewarding. And forget fuel shortage, think there's a red wine outage down that way.:friday

Dived again this morning and went to sandsfoot again.I had planned to go a different route than yesterday but i followed my heart and not my head.I followed the same route and saw a lone mullet and schoolie bass early on but no big fish.
The tide was on the way out and vis was very good at the start like yesterday.Found another thornback ray today a big male who had no fear of me at all and i followed him on the bottom for a while.A fantastic creature.
No flatties again and i was supprised at the lack of scallops aswell!! I think the scallops there have been over fished,lots of empty shells under the yachts:rcard
Once the tide reached the very low the vis dissapered to 1.5 meters at best so after 3 hours i headed for the beach.As i came across a yacht i noticed under the keel in the shade were lots of schoolie bass.As i passed every yacht the same thing lots of bass upto about 3lb under the yachts.
As i neared the shore in no more than 1 ft of water i saw a beautiful minature plaice 4-5 inches long.So they are there somewhere.
Wind started to pick up as south westerlys are on there way.
No fish taken again but that's not always the point.

Nice one Glowpipe...Should have had some of those bass though... I suppose you were pondering the cost of sinking a few yachts?!!!
Chickflicker and I went out this evening in worsening conditions. Not much seen apart from a group of 3 bass whilst hiding in the weed. They came in during an aspetto as bold as can be, so I picked one for tea! Considering it was so close the shot was awful - through the gap between the gills and out of the lip! The fish took off like a rocket with me in hot pursuit. After a quick bundle in the kelp I submitted the fish and popped him on the stringer!
Conditions deteriorated so we headed in for a celebratory magnum from the garage. Fish was 5 and a half pounds. Nothing of note in the gut for all you anglers out there.

Glowworm's probably sick of bass for supper after eating it for the last 3 weeks! Bet he's still got some of that monster in the freezer...

I dreamt about spearing a double after watching that Escalopez DVD last night... does funny things to the mind revision and caffeine!

Will, Um, think I'm ranked as an amateur this year.... with people like Ben, James,Glowworm... and even Flyflicker having caught more fish than me! doh! never mind once I am allowed out to play again I should (hopefully if all goes well) have a new 'toy' to play with....
