I observed Claude Roland, the winner of DNF (122 m) at the CIPA Open last sunday ;

his technique is amazing : after the classic leg kick of breast stroke and before pulling the arms right to the thighs, he adds kind of dolphin kick...

What do you think of this technique ? Is it widespread ? For me, it was the first time I saw it...

Try to find some unassisted CB videos, I think Topi and maybe David Lee use that also. The easiest place to find them would be on the FREE site.

Thanks a lot... as far as I could see, neither Stig Avall Severinsen nor Kars use this double kick technique in DNF...

I have found that with the no fins horizontal, using the additional dolphin kick takes more out of me and is not worth the gains in distance that it gives. I used to play with this quite a bit but pretty much gave up on it.

ie.
25m I can do 2.5-3 strokes using the addidtional dolphin kick...
without the dolphin kick I do 4.5 to 5 strokes relaxed...

The difference in difficulty between the two can sometimes be 0.5 to 1 point more difficult just by adding the dolphin kick..

To give you an example of the difficulty scale I use...1 is extrelely easy, 10 is Blackout....I would get my first contraction at 6.5 difficulty and then between 6.5 to 9.5 I will get about 10 contractions....So the difference between doing the dolphin kick for a 75m repetition and coming out of the water at say 7 difficulty with 2 contraction and NOT using it and coming out with no contractions at 6.0 difficulty is a big difference for me.

(wow, that was a long scentence)

Another technique that gives you a little advantage in dnf is the shoulder shrug. After doing your arm stroke and bringing your arms to your sides realy tuck your shoulders in thus reducing the surface area breaking the water. Olympic breaststrokers use this technique to glide more after their arm pull.It requires alot less effort than the dolphin kick but still requires some effort.

Cheers Nathan Watts

First time I hear about that Nathan. I'm clueless. Anychance you have some vid/visual aid for that?

Thanks for this new idea... I am trying this next time ! Great !

Michael,
To do the shoudler shrug, as your arms reach the point where they are flat against your body, try to touch your ears with your shoulders. This reduces frontal surfaces area, and drag.

Instead of doing a dolphin kick, I do 2 frog kicks per stroke. the first is a fairly narrow kick, done to keep from losing speed. The second is a full, wide kick, focusing on pushing myself forward, Seems to work well for me, and more forward motion for less effort than a dolphin kick

damn watts that avatar is disturbingly interesting. i found myself mesmerized by it..i know its off topic but that avatar caught my eye

Careful you don't watch it too much!
You will get a strange phone call, then only 1 week before a strange little girl crawls thru your tv screen, and gets water all over you carpet...... rofl

If you want to see flawless dnf technique look at the Walrus. Even in competition still nails the 3 strokes to 25m.With the shoulder shrug :waterwork We will have to get some vid some time and post it.
