I was wondering about static training. I am beginner but I would like to increase my comfortable dive time over the course of next winter. To do this I intend to train dynamic and static (dry). Before, on all my dives (spearing, cwt, static and dynamic) I have done my breath up the same way. First I relax, try breath light as possible for a minute, take three deep and slow breaths (4s in and 8s out) and go. In static my contractions start at 1:30 or to 2:30 depending how many attempts I've done. I can hold for 50 strong contractions which gives me around 4min total time.

I read from the forums, that many of the more experienced divers do their breath-up differently when doing dry static. I tried today by doing similar slow, but deep breaths for two minutes (10 times). This might be close to hyperventilation, but I did not feel tingling or light head. I was able to push the start of contractions to 3mins easily.

So my question would be, that if I want to increase my comfortable dive time (dyn and spearing), is it more beneficial to do dry statics with longer breath-up and try to increase my comfortable hold time, or should I keep my breath-up short and try to endure larger amount of contractions?

Thanks in advance!

Some might argue I'm wrong but if you are interested in 'real world' diving like spearing etc (as opposed to competitions and so on) I would just practice with no special breathup, just normal breathing and focusing on staying as relaxed as possible.

You can experiment with whatever works for you of course (as long as you are not hyperventilating). I don't think the kind of breathup relates to your second question i.e. on whether you should try to increase your comfortable hold time or the 'stressed' part.

Personally I constantly try to increase my comfortable hold time since that's the bit I enjoy lol If you are going for competitions etc obviously working on being able to take contractions is also really important but unless you have a reason and/or are enjoying it, then why bother much with the 'hard' part - using the word 'endure' doesn't sound like fun :)

Dive safe with a buddy and have fun!

Wow! I'm very impressed. Makes my 3:30 dry look like a sneeze!! How long are u practicing apnea??

Hi Baldyfish......thanks for your post....I practice APNEA static for 8 years ...... and I try to reach the 8'00 "for Christmas....but the last few seconds are the hardest.....:p......Bye bye.....

Hard to see but it looks like you contractions didn't kick in until 4 or 5 minutes? Is that right?

yes you are right ....... contractions start at 5 minutes after ...... .... it is the work "empty lung" is important ....( i hope my translation it's enough clear......for a French...lol)....;)

Wow 5min no contractions!!

Practicing empty lung will increase the 'no contraction' time when you hold full lung?

yes you are right ...... I try to take 3 minutes with the lungs empty ......it's a good and necessary exercice....to improve your chrono....:duh
