It's been a while since I've been active here on DB, but thought I'd turn back to the old gang for input. Anyone out there diving near Dunedin New Zealand? Quite colder than where I am now (Florida), but I'll be down there shortly for a year. Looking forward to it, but hoping to not have to go cold turkey on the diving.... just going diving cold. Thanks!

Are you kidding!! Diving in Dunedin - thats on par with diving in Queenstown!! Way too cold!!!!!

I'm a kiwi - but a sook and hate the cold:) I'm in the North Island though (East Coast) .... good luck with finding a dive buddy in Dunedin!! Maybe Kaikoura?? I think your best bet would be to team up with the guys that freedive in Wellington - if u are interested I can get an e mail addy to you...so you can maybe train with the Wellington ones or at least compete if there are any comps in NZ...So are you coming home? Are you kiwi?

hey kiwi chick where on the east coast are you? im based in auckland but go up to doubtless bay and taupo bay now and then the divings pretty sweet up there but i don't know of any good spots closer to auckland ay

hey everybody, thanks for your replies. yeah, i know it's going to be cold. i'm from the states and lived in ohio (northern part) for a long time until moving to florida 6 years ago. so i'm dreading going back to cold weather. my freediving is for pleasure. not really into comps. did a little bit of spearing, but feel a little guilty taking the few fish we have here off the reefs. still love to test my limits though. i'm going to dunedin because i was accepted at the university of otago to their graduate program in wildlife filmmaking. when possible i prefer to shoot my underwater stuff freediving, but there are still a lot of times i break down and throw on a tank. i'll be heading down in a few weeks and will be bringing my drysuit and my cressi freediving suit- the warmest i've had- in hopes of using it in the summer.

i hear so many great things about nz. not just the beauty of the country, but also lots about the friendly people. looking forward to my time there. and if you hear about somebody freezing to death while freediving in dunedin, well, it just might be me! :)

If either of you guys are interested in joining us for training here in wellington at any stage just let me know, my email address is davidmullins9@yahoo.co.nz
Pool training is 2-3 times per week depending on how committed we happen to be feeling.
We're going to start going to taupo for CB training because there is no deep water around here (well, none that is free of strong currents anyway). The more the merrier for that sort of business - we have a float, lanyard (courtesy of John at No Bubbles) and 70m line now so we can cater for pretty much anyone :)

ps - if any of you crazy buggers down there in the deep south are sick of freezing to half to death every time you get in the water, one of our members is going to be importing custom elios freediving suits. The prices are surprisingly good, let me know if you want more details.
