As Bluecape said: pinnacle systems make good, user friendly Non-linear edit systems (NLE). Also try their parent company, Avid.
FREE Professional DV Editing for the enthusiast
Avid makes software (Mac & PC) and hardware NLE's that start out with a
FREE software based program (Avid free DV - limited, 2 video layers, 8 audio - but it's
FREE).
Xpress DV video editing software for PC and Mac
$800 - $2000 (USD)
Avid Express, is a powerful NLE. It is often used for broadcast television (mostly documentaries and "simple" programs). This is often sold with Mojo. The Mojo is essentially a format converter box, unnecessary unless you're using multiple decks / formats / monitors. If you don't need to jump through those hoops, don't get Mojo.
Avid Liquid- Video Editing, DVD Authoring, Real-time Effects
Avid Liquid is another great, professional NLE (Pinnacle). It uses a slightly modified workspace, that I'm not very familiar with. I do know that it requires some decent horsepower from your computer to run with all of it's features enabled.
Sony makes an NLE called Vegas. I've never used it, but some event videographers that I know say that it works for them.
Of course Adobe makes some great editing software, as well (again, lack of familiarity on my part prevents any meaningful comments on them).
Things to look for:
What are YOUR requirements? If you are sticking with cuts, dissolves, overlays, & titles (text); with dialogue and music underneath, almost any NLE will do (and I'd recommend the free dv).
If you want a few effects, almost all systems will have at least a basic effect palette.
If you're in need of a full featured "professional" system, be prepared to spend about as much as a high end sports car, and get a service contract with some tech heads for when (not if) the system crashes. Oh, and make sure you use HomeRun Media, Inc.
Have Fun
Rick
EDIT: P.S. what make / model of camera are you using?
