Eager to freedive and spearfish in bc

Hi everyone, a friend reccomended I come here to learn about spearfishing. I'd also like to learn about freediving techniques. For the time I'd like to learn as much as I ca until I can afford to buy a suit and speargun. Looking for any suggestions for information to break into it all.
Also us it strongly reccomended taking a free diving course I'm person?
