how do you other divers get your ears to pop when you dive. I tried holding my nose and blowing but that only made my ears hurt worse. Is there some sort of special technique for this or am i just being a wimp about it? Thanks for any info

Definitley don't blow until it hurts. You shouldn't have any pain when equalizing unless you are not equalizing soon enough. Can you equalize using this technique on dry land before you dive?

I dont know, i didnt try. How do you get your ears to equalize? do you yawn or something? How do you even equalize them?

try this:

1. take a deep breath, close your mouth and exhale slowly through your nose
2. repeat step one while pinching your nose. you will hear a short hissing sound and you will feel the airpressure inflating your nostrils as well as in your ears (on the eardrum)

what happen is is that you increase the air pressure in your nose (and mouth/throat) which will eventually equalise your ears as air is being pushed into your middle ear through the eustacchian tubes.

that technique is called valsalve maneuvre.

efficient equalising is a matter of practise, it should never be forced or painful.

use google to find an image of a crossection of the ear. that will help.

have fun :)

Thats, good, do as the last post said, but to add to that; push the back of your tongue directly up into the roof of your month, that will add more presure, hence open up your tubes.

You may need to just practice this a few times a day, for several weeks to soften your tubes, but never force it. I find myself, if I don't keep it up, then I can't dive deep until a re-soften my tubes again :head

Good instructions above. I will add that you should be well hydrated and that you might need to understand just why you are equalizing....

Your inner ear, under your eardrum, is an air cavity. It has tubes connected to the inner cavities of your nose that allow air to pass between the cavity and the outside airpressure through your nose/mouth (eustachion tubes). If you aren't well hydrated, the tubes can be sticky and not open easily. Also, sometimes it helps to flex your jaw carefully...

In anycase, practice equalizing very gently. All you want is your eardrum to turn convex....it should never hurt.
