I've noticed when I practice my static breath holds I can do it longer on an empty stomach.
After I eat I can barely do any decent holds.

My question is? what sort of meal can I eat, and how long before I dive, for the best results?

Should my nutrition plans start the day before? I know runners load up on carbs the day before the race.

What can I do to optimize my performance? i.e. vitamins, hydration, sports drinks, carbs etc......?

search around there are some threads dedicated to this, basically you cant do a good hold on full stomach because the digestion process hogs up allot!!! of oxygen so you typically want to wait a few hours before you can get optimum holds, yes you want carbs and lots of alkaline foods but for specifics do look up the existing threads

Though I wasn't training for a competition or anything, I always made sure to eat a decent (though not large) breakfast and lunch when I was last out on the boat during my AIDA courses. Too much before swimming is obviously bad, but I found if I didn't eat anything I was too cold in the water, but the food helped my body produce more heat so I could enjoy my dives more.

Just another small factor to keep in mind (at least for recreational diving).
