Hello im new to spearfishing and going to build my first gun. Im not sure if closed track is worth all the trouble it takes. and if it is ,do I need to use a liner such as Delrin or some other material

thanks Kirk

How long is your gun going to be? I think an enclosed track will only really be of use on guns over 110cm or 50" guns.

60" is one hell of a gun for a first time weapon mate! That is a bluewater gun and (almost) useless around the reef. Do you intend to hunt bluewater exclusively? If so and if you are a beginner I would think twice before hooking up to a big fish without some solid experience building up to that, I would recommend a shorter gun at first say 50" - 55" and hunting inshore waters

60" isn't really that big of a gun depending on were you hunt. I often blast white sea bass in southern california with a 62" on shore dives around reefs and it hasn't been too big at all. I like the range and as long as you don't point it at a rock and shoot it is fine. However I would try out several guns before I even got into the idea of building my own gun. Why would you build something when you don't even know what you like? The only benefit of building your own gun is personal satisfaction, not a saving in cost. I would work on becoming a gun expert before you even dream of building your own.

lol cows???? if they swim infront of me i will .... i will be hunting some in the texas gulf at the oil rigs and they told me in cozumel that they could take me somewhere around there to hunt. as you can tell im not only new to spearfishing but to scuba as well. just went on my first trip to cozumel about a month ago. i would like a gun i can use for all types of hunting.

I ordered a mid-handle kit from spearotiki.com. the stock is up to me, my teak should be here this week. maybe i should go with 9/16 bands it will have 3 with room to add 1 more if it is needed. it looks like this gun will take alot of work so i only want to build one.

If your going to have that much rubber, think mass, mass and more mass for that stock. It will help absorb the recoil, making it to a profile that lets it swing through the water is the fun bit. With that much punch an enclosed track is worthwhile

These guys sell a pretty good package for building enclosed tracks.

I've must say, I've never build a gun in my life, so perharps the pros can thow their 2 cents.
