I've worked on my Equalizing (Frenzel) for quite a while, and have finally got things working pretty well. So I picked up a Trigons to go maskless for some DNF/FIM dives, and I found that equalizing with it was much much tougher.

One reason was that small amounts of air were leaking out (which is obviously a problem with the seal that I'll work on), but even other than that it was much harder. Any other ideas as to why? Is it purely a mental thing (since it feels different not having my hand holding my nose) or is there something specific I can work on?

Your hand may have been compressing more of the nose, whereby the Trygons (if worn low) may require you to still inflate your nostrils a bit.

Maybe try wearing it higher or more "vertically" oriented.

Also, tighten it up to stop any leakage!

I like the Apnea Academy noseclip for the improved comfort when worn TIGHT.

thats quite a good explanation of why I could not get along with my clip (trygons too) at last vertical blue. I had never used one before. The other non obvious (until you try) problem is the expanding air release in the way back up! Feels very uncomfortable the first few times.

I'll, cough cough, stick with my mask for now!

I've never worn a Paradisa, but the large, circular pads cover more surface area and could reduce this effect, regardless of how it was worn.

I had the paradisa, the large pads made it slip off! can't win eh!

2 pierced nostrils + septum, 2 washers and an inch of threaded rod.

For the ultimate Freediver: Surgically remove the eardrums and crazy glue your nostrils shut.

You'd be down to 3 senses... But quite possibly hit a new PB.

Need to fill the sinus passages with aquarium silicon too. With all that hot air around, is the ice off Lake Simcoe yet?

I remember taking a while to get used to just nose clip diving.
When i first started my hand still came up to equalize and when it didn't i would find it harder.
Id suggest to stick with it and it wont take to long to adjust. I probably took 4 months.
If you keep going back and forth from mask to clip its only harder.
There is no comparison to diving without a mask in my opinion. The connection with the water and the increased dive response not to mention having your arms free to stroke pull or streamline.

watts, this is another debate I'm sure. But as a spearo, I just have got used to seeing everything down there. Every last particle, shadow, fish, rock, piece of weed. Those fluid goggle things are like too much gin & tonic in a steam room.

I guess I would get it in 4 months...

Just got the AA noseclip in the post (thanks Liv) so have yet to try it out. Should be fun watts does vision improve at all over time? Not so much vision as just getting used to it. Not going down the big contact lenses road so maybe fluid goggles are the next step

When I do deep dives now wearing a mask feels weird. Vision doesn't get much better but the whole dive just seems more focused and connected with the water. In many heart rate tests i did hr drop and stays down significanly.

I struggled with the nose clip loads, I only just got comfortable with it last years after spending a week or so nose clip only. For me the water sensation over my eyes and nose gave me an uncomfortable feeling, which made eq hard. I tried with fluid goggles, and flooded aquaspere seal googles, which helped, but added more stuff to deal with, i didnt like the changes from above water to below, and vice versa, and the change in focus. No goggles feels better to me.

Also your head position can get out of line, without the hand on your nose you can more easy look up. I found diving holding the nose clip helps to know the head position is good.

I got up to my pb depth with nose clip only in 2 weeks in the Bahamas, didn't do it the whole time, so with some time and exposure it will come. I was learning mouthfill, and the nose clip helps loads, so maybe all the repeats, frc's, success dives, not so good dives helped distract me from the nose clip.

Blue warm water helped too!
