Why exactly do you have to equalize when scuba diving? I mean, the whole point of using pressurized air is to make the pressure equal between the lungs and water, so you can breath normaly. when you breath, any compressed air you would breath would go through your eustachian tubes, and because it is supposed to be the same pressure as the water; you shouldnt have to equalize. but thats not the case, so why not?

In the common case, the e-tubes act as a one-way valve and get air out of the middle ear. Most people have to open the e-tubes inorder to get air inside = equalizing.

oh, awsome thanks

EDIT: but wait, wouldnt the pressure outside the ear outomaticly open the valves under pressure, or is the valve more resistant to pressure then the eardrum (which wouldnt make much sense) and also, why exactly do they need act as a valve?
