Hi!

I was wondering what kind of equipment I would need for spearfishing in Bali?
What kind of wet suit, speargun etc.

I`m thinking it will be somewhat different from what I`m used to diving here in cold Norway, with 6.5 mm wetsuit and 100 cm railgun.

Depends on what type of diving you plan on doing. Bali has warm water (a 1.5-3mm open cell suit will be fine) and just about any type of diving that you would want to do from shallow reef to blue water. from small snapper to world record dogtooth tuna. If you dont have a whole lot of experience with Bluewater diving I suggest you dont start in Bali UNLESS you have a good guide who is knowledgeable and experieinced. The tides and currents in Bali are VERY extreme and lethal. Language barriers between panga captains and bali locals can make coming up with a good dive plan very difficult. Even close to shore you are dealing with large surf and heavy currents.

You might try contacting Andre (Andre spearguns) as I know he does charters out of Kuta.

Also there is another guy who might be able to set you up on a dive or with gear and what not. He is Behslayer on the forums but has a website and builds guns in bali (bukit peninsula)

Ulusub Spearfishing Co.

The water in bali is very clear for the most part. I would suggest not even thinking of diving anywhere near Kuta or Semanyak as the water tends to be very dirty and polluted. Head out towards Candidasa and Amed for clear water and awesome reefs. You might even check out outer islands such as Nusa lembongan, Lombok, the Gillis and so on. Ive had some awesome experiences diving in Indonesia but some very scary ones as well. Get as much information as you can before heading out. Find a guide who knows the area, speaks english or what ever other language works, and be smart.

Thanks for the response! I`m now in contact with behslayer.

Should I bring my fins considering the footpockets fits me with 5 mm neoprene socks? Won`t they be to big if I just use 2 mm socks?

Would a 3 mm full open cell wetsuit be to warm in Bali waters?

It depends, I think it would be the most you would ever need, but some parts of Bali are really warm, and others are cooler due to deep ocean currents. You could always just wear your top with trunks though I would highly recommend covering your skin with something as there is plenty of little critters that like to sting, both in the water column and on the reef. Check out the newest Hawaii Skin Diver Magazine. There is a whole article about diving for Dogtooth tuna around Nusa Lembongan. Might have some helpful information, also gives you an idea of the gear it takes to land one of those fish.

Ok, so for a allround wetsuit you would think a 2 mm would be better?
Is there any way for me to read that article you are talking about without having to subscribe to that magazine for a year?

you could probably order the issue from their website Hawaii Skin Diver. Other than that Im not sure. I think a 2mm suite would be your best bet.
