It is official: Italy is getting ready to host an unprecedented event!
The Apnea Evolution centre will be hosting the AIDA indoor Freediving World Championship during the long-awaited Europe Evolution Cup which will be held in Lignano Sabbiadoro, from 6th to 16th of October 2011. The Europe Evolution Cup organising committee and the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia are proud to present the AIDA World Championship, an amazing event which the most skilled freedivers in the world have been waiting for.
The organising committee started working a long time ago in order to set up the most spectacular event in freediving history.
10 days of unique emotions, about 1200 athletes representing about 30 countries from all the continents are expected, live broadcast of the finals. Dozens of journalists and media have announced that they will be attending the event. With a staff of 70 people, Apnea Evolution is getting ready to run the event which will host both the World Championship and the “Freediving Tour of Italy”.
Institutions, schools, universities, research institutes, institutional and commercial partners are collaborating with the organizing committee in order to support the event and the athletes, as well as to make the event held in Friuli an unforgettable one.

As wrote on the Registration Form, the enrolment for the World Championship will end the 31/07/2011 but those who make the registration within the 15/06/2011, will get a precious gadget for free, very useful for the dives.
There will be a drawing of two names for the winning of a free excursion (Venezia – Trieste) and seven drawings which one you could win choice dinners in a typical Friulian restaurant.
Inside the Registration Form you’ll find all the fees about the competition, the arranged Hotel and Restaurants situated inside the Olympic village, with Full Board service (Overnight-stay, breakfast - lunch – dinner waited on table)
For all the athletes who stay at the Olympic village and in the arranged hotels, the use of the swimming pools for training is free of charges.

Yeah, it's pretty far from ideal. I don't entirely know why when there's a 25m there.

Agree. Next WC should be held in Chile. NO leg presses off the wall at all.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKJczn6TY84]YouTube - ‪World's largest swimming pool - in Chile‬‏[/ame]

The real DYN and DNF athletes results with no wall presses would be nice to know.

Leg presses at pool disciplines is like allowing rope pulls at the ascent ,say, every 25m in the depth disciplines in CWT and CNF.

Do not like it at all; we have known that DNF is done on a 25m pool and have been training on that. I think is absurd to change that on a WC! Does AIDA International have any thoughts on that?

Also, I think the shedule is not convenient at all! It requires for all hopeful finalists to plan to stay in Italy for at least 10days. Not many of us can take that much time off work.

Personally I do not care. I think I may even like the 50m pool more for DNF, but frankly told, I do not see any important performance difference - I did competition PB's in both types of pools. I prefer ten times more a flat bottom 50m pool, than a 25m pool with huge steps, and a irregular bottom. Anyway, what is important, is that the conditions are the same for all.

It depends if they want impressive numbers coming out of the WCs or not. In a 50m, there will not be any challenges on the WR. I doubt anyone will make 200m, for that matter.

The time of day that everything is scheduled is far from ideal, but I do't know if it's possible to change that.

If leg-pushing off the wall in a 25 meter pool is cheating, should the freefall in CNF and CWT be forbidden:) It's not realy diving is it? More of an extreme static.

Just a thought.
Let the bullets fly..

Excellent point Pelle! While we're about it why don't we abolish coasting down hills in cycling races?
It's not like they were moving very quickly coming up the hill, they could at least pedal on the way down..

Exactly my point!
In CNF you have the freefall, in bike races you have the downhill.
And in DNF you have two walls that are there. Are we gonna forbid any pushing off the wall or is it just the 25 m pool that is cheating?

I´m not saying CNF isn't hard , because you do have to get up there again. I´m just saying in DNF you keep going as far as you can with the help of yourself, suit and weight, and two walls that are there to keep the water in and to tell you when to turn.
Use it as you like I say!

Do we really want different length from one WC to another?
Or are we gonna have a 25 meter world record and a 50 meter world record? And then another for pools that are shallow. And another for pools that are deep.
Isn't competing in championships about comparing against each other, rather than in normal competitions where you can focus on yourself a bit more?

let the canonballs come...

I agree with what Will wrote: DNF should be about swimming, not pushing from the wall.

Plus, the 25m pool is really shallow, about 1.5m.

Dear friends and AIDA athletes,

I'm writing in the name of the organizing committee (Friuli
Venezia-Giulia region, CONI Italy Friuli Venezia-Giulia, LIBERTAS sport
promotion center, Ge.Tur s.c.a.r.l, Apnea EVolution a.s.d.). I've been
reported about the criticisms on DeeperBlue forum from some athletes
concerning some logistics options unanimously chosen by the organizers.
The organizing committee is committed to provide a historical visibility
not only to AIDA and you athletes, but also to the freediving
discipline, to a level that has never been achieved in previous world
championships.

You might not know that this organizing committee has been cooperating
for a long time and with a professionalism that is recognized worldwide,
not only in freediving but also in many other sports live swimming,
finswimming, athletics, etc., and in events like Eyof 2005 (20.000
persons in all disciplines from all over the world), Universiade (15.000
persons in all disciplines from all over the world), Masters Games
(17.000 persons from Europe), and freediving world championship
(probably 300-500 persons). We find the criticisms, and in some cases
the offenses, demotivating for who has decided to invest out-of-pocket
tens of thousands of euros for the championship event, and we find
incomprehensible and reductive that the criticisms, and all this
discomfort, is caused for example from the choice to have the DNF
discipline in the 50m pool rather than in the 25m one. These are
anxieties that don't give you credit, and show a deep immaturity, and
also are the cause of the missing visibility, growth, and recognition of
our discipline.

The choice is forced by logistics availability and by the live TV coverage.

I invite you not to lose time on dwelling and criticizing on these
unproductive particulars, but to concentrate to get the best of
yourselves in an event that will be the most followed worldwide with
unprecedented synergies and side events.

Another very important invitation is about your registrations: if by 31
July they will have not been sent to the secretary's office, with the
corresponding payment, the world competition will be canceled!

Hoping that you will allow us to give an opportunity of growth, fun, and
visibility to you and the whole freediving discipline, I wish to see you
all in Lignano, hosted by Europe Evolution Cup 2011.

Yours sincerely,
Alessandro Vergendo

Hello Alessandro,

regarding the Fees:

Do we need to pay now (by end July) the Event Fee AND the Hotel?
What happens if we have to cancel our participation; do we get a refund?

many thanks

Hi guys
please do not ask those questions here, i'm sure there is an email contact on the application form that you can use and be sure it will be given a read

as far as i know, Alessandro does read this forum just occasionally

bye
