Heh, just noticed this.
I dunno, I'm not going to even try and explain Lordi. But I've had a blast following the public debates
Before:
-National shame!
-Please stop this, in the name of god!
-Oh the dark ages, satan worshippers represeting finland
-Some even appealed to the president to stop it
After (mostly the same peole)
-Oh, I knew they would win all a long
-National heroes!
-It was all about "protest votes", bah, big deal
-Oh the dark ages, satan worshippers represeting finland!!1 Dark forces taking over the whole culture
For me personally, Eurovision is, how would I put it...Not very important. But it's fun to see my country make a splash somewhere, but I've never quite understood how it's always "we won!"...I had nothing to do with it! Not surprisingly, when success does not come it's usually "they/he/she loose". Curious...
Not particularly my cup of tea, their music, but some of them are good, catchy tunes and their videos look pretty cool for the first time you see 'em.
All in all I think they won because they had a good compromise:
-Catchy tune
-Enough "camp value" to get the protest votes
-Nice showmanship (pyros and what not)
Most of the other competitors had 1 or 2 of these down, but not 3. Also the timing was good, because people perhaps felt the whole thing needed some fresh air.
Anywho, it may seem that it's one of those "instant success over night"-types of things, but actually they have been at it for over 10 years. So respect and good luck to them for sticking with it. Can you imagine them walking to a record label looking like that and asking for them to sign them? It's taken a lot of work to and I sincerily hope they do well...
As for people critisizing them and saying that they don't belong in eurovision and it's childish and blah blah blah...Well, to me that's like claiming that clowns don't belong in the circus and the whole thing is childish anyway...Duh...It's a show, and they don't even claim to break any breath hold world records so I'm willing to let it slide
