Hello i was wondering if someone could help me as im new to spearfishing and need to work on holding my breath. I have seen the expand-a-lung advertised and was wondering if anyone has one or basically knows if they work and if i should get one. Also what exersises can i do running sit ups to strenghten my core and help me keep my breath for longer and help will be great thank you!

I have a similar one called PowerBreathe (or something like that). I used it a few times when I bought it but my conclusion that it was not that useful for freediving and more useful for running etc.

I didn't use it for long enough though but I could not see how it would help me for freediving as it feels that it's good for strengthening the muscles associated with breathing but not expand them in any way. If anything it might make you breathe in a 'shallower' way as if you crank up the difficulty, you won't take in full breaths.

If I remember correctly the only use I could think of is that if you are careful to use your diaphragm only when you breathe in and out then it should strengthen it and it might be useful for equalisation. Then again it's mainly flexibility you need and also, there are plenty of other better exercises you can do.

I wouldn't buy it if I were you, it'll end up collecting dust.

Hi I think that practice it's a way to get a bigger lung capacity. At the begging I was only able to dive 5 or 6 m after 2 months of spearfishing 3 times a week. I went down for 16 m.
