so i've just started trying to do the frenzel and i've been have some issues. i can do it if i hold my nose (which obviously defeats the whole point). when i do it underwater air comes out of my nose. any suggestions?

Hi Lynsea,
Well the Frenzel technique is actually done while holding the nose. You may be considering hands-free equalizing which is MUCH harder to teach. I still can't do it and I teach freediving. If you're new to freediving, focus on using the proper Frenzel technique (while holding your nose) and make sure you're not using Valsalva (also done while holding the nose). Hands-free equalizing is a very advanced technique- most people who can do it can just do it naturally--lucky genetics :).

To make sure you're doing Frenzel correctly put one hand on your stomach and use the other hand to pinch your nose. Equalize your ears. If you feel your stomach move or tense, you're probably using Valsalva. Now move your hand from your stomach to your throat. Equalize. If you feel your throat move, you're probably using Frenzel and you're good to go. Also, if you find you're constantly getting stuck at around 15 feet because you can't equalize, you're using Valsalva most likely. If you can get down past that you're probably using Frenzel.

Hope that's helped!
