During a competition in Massy (Paris area) on 12th of February 2011, Brice Lequette will try to break the world record in the discipline 16x50. The current record is more than five year old, and held by Mikael Asp (Sweden), who managed to swim the 16 50m lengths in 11'15".

If you want to participate at the competition, find the details here: Apnée attitude - Tentative de record du monde en 16 x 50m apnée

OK, so he did it!!

The new record is unbelievable 11 minutes and 10 senconds (5 seconds less than the old record of Mikael Asp (Sweden) from the German Long Night of Apnea in 2006).

More details on the blog of Apnea.cz : APNEA.cz - Blog

Congratulations to Brice!

Don't forget that it includes the average breath-up between laps, so the actual average dive was quite a bit faster.

Yep, I was very happy to do 12'41", and that gave me a nice CO2 headache at the end :martial. My underwater swim times were 30 - 33 seconds, leaving me 10-12 seconds to surface, turn, breath and go. Half way I took 1 little longer break of about 15-20 seconds as the CO2 was really tough and breaking my spirit. I don't think I'll try any time soon to swim faster than my pb because it's so tough for my mind. Well maybe next time when I wear a speed suit in a 50m pool, I'll see if I can sustain 30s laps without too much CO2 build up.

Congratulations Brice Lequette!

That's mad! :) well done on yours too Kars, pretty impressive!

Do you think there's any danger of blackout during this kind of breathold? Any of the competitors blacked out?

Very, very interesting, extraordinary !
Thanks for info.

I take this opportunity to remember the lap and split times of the best world performance in Extreme Endurance 200 x 50 mt (10.000 mt.), athlete Luca Loris Guarnaschelli, Rome 2009

Final time of 2h 53 '28 "

Split :
- to 2.500 mt = 45'06 "
- the 5.000 mt = 1h 28'56 "
- to 7.500 mt = 2h 11'42 "
- to 10.000 mt = 2h 53'28 "

That looks like a 14'xx"time for 16x50, indeed a high pace.

I must say that the difference between 14 and 11'10 is big, you're eliminating 3' of breathing, and will have much more CO2 to deal with.

But 10.000m is way way more than 800m, so that also much bring up some tough barriers!

If we speak about endurance 50m dives, we must not forget mentioning the 24 hours of 50m apnea lengths of Sandi Bitenc from Slovenia. He did in total 51.100m (1022 laps).

Some more stats from the thread http://forums.deeperblue.com/general-freediving/83347-live-24-hour-freediving-record-attempt.html :

That was a terrifying achievement. I still find it unbelievably impressive.

If you have only a limited amount of monofin pool time, it could be a years training done in 1 day!
