It has been pointed out by forum members that it is illegal (and socially unacceptable) to advertise gender-specific roles in most western democracies (inc. UK, USA, most/all EU countries, Oz & NZ). However, in/for Egypt, the position is less clear - but in light of the Arab-Spring, perhaps they will/should now adopt similar democratic standards?

Actually this is common practice in the Middle East. They also specify nationality sometimes as well.

To some extent, it works here. For example, if you run a restaurant or a shop and all your staff are Filipino, they can communicate and work better together. If you have multi-nationality staff then service is difficult as they cant communicate efficiently amongst themselves. Teams are managed quicker "in their own language" as the standard of spoken English of migrants here is quite poor.

There are also some nationalities who will NOT work with others...

The reason why they are probably asking for a female is that it is common for females to be the attractive front line - they regard it is pleasing for the customer, so then, good customer service. They can also ask for nationalities, I have seen plenty of ads that advertise for western expats only.

Some of those ads above will make some of you cringe however its the way of the world here, right or wrong, it works for them.

An eloquent defence of sexism, racism (and possibly homophobia) island_sands. But much/most of the world moved on from that decades ago (and look what a fantastic state our societies and economies are in now rofl).

It will be interesting to see if the new Arab democracies will go forwards or backwards -- listening to the young people involved, I'm quite optimistic.
