few more gun building questions

i forgot to put these in my last thread... so here goes. these mostly concern gluing/finishing wood..

to glue the laminates together, should i just use some sort of epoxy resin, then to finish it and protect it- should i give it coats of that same resin?

I'm just looking for tips on gluing and finishing/protecting the wood

I used some ordinary polyurethane glue from the local hardware store and then OILED the gun afterwards. Works fine.
Try a search on the forum. There are many great posts on this subject.

what type of wood will you be using?

If teak, than dont put any finish on it other than a teak oil. When it fades a bit you can always add more oil. Plus teak has its own natural oils which makes it ideal for marine use.

Mahogany is ok, but its a little light. You are probably definitely going to want to put a finish on mahogany. I would check out your local marine shops. They have plenty of products for that sort of stuff. Maybe a two part finish will be the most durable.

I think teak is running for around 20-25 bucks a board foot right now, rediculous. You can also look in junk yards for old boats. teak swimsteps or railings can always be re-milled. Teak lasts forever so even if it looks crappy, you can mill it and make it brand new again.

Mahogany is fine, to be honest in some respects it is better than teak for guns. It is quite durable and with a decent epoxy finish on it is more than good enough for a gun. It's lack of density compared to Teak gives you the chance to balance the gun better. Often a slim teak gun can be nose heavy but the same gun in Mahogany can be balanced correctly because it is less dense more lead is needed and can be moved further back.

I used Varathene(sp?) on my mahogany gun. Just sand it down and redo it every winter. Touch up is easy too.
