Fiberglass fins in luggage

Hi. I'm going to fly to Rhodes and I need to put my fiberglass fins ("mat-mas K pro 2") in the luggage, since ryanair does not allow to bring them as hand luggage :naughty . I can bend the fins in a "C" shape and fit them into my rigid suitcase. My question/worry is: will they go back to the initial shape after the travel? Or leaving them bent for hours will make the deformation permanent?

Well, firstly fiberglass is quite brittle. Remember they've been designed to flex in one planar movement only. And, even if you could bend them to fit a suitcase, you cannot guarantee that the baggage handlers are going to be as delicate as you'd like them to be, nor that they wont be at the bottom of the pile, crushed under how many pairs of beach shorts, sombreros and volumax industrial hair driers...

In short, how much do you value your fins, and could you replace them if the inevitable happened? I'd probably say 'a lot' and 'not very easily as i'd be on holiday in an unfamiliar place'.

I'd rather take my chances and attempt to get them in as hand luggage, and where this fails pay the extra to get them in as oversized/fragile with as much bubble wrap as you can muster around them, and a big plank of wood down the middle to keep them in shape.

I have a large scuba luggage back which is big enough to take my freedive fins without bending them, plus all of my other luggage. I can put clothes around them to protect them from the gorillas handling the bags at the airport. Try something along these lines..

Have a look into posting the fins to yourself at your destination. Well packed and insured that could be the best and possibly cheapest way to go about it knowing what Ryanair are like for baggage size and weight.
There could be an issue with taxes, but since you're sending from and to the EU I have a feeling you'd be OK. Something to look into.

Clearly never flown with Ryanair.
An airline that's faster to slap on extra charges you'll be hard pushed to find anywhere in the world. Fish would take up spears against us in self defence before Ryanair would ever let someone on with hand luggage that doesn't fit within their limits.

This doesn't answer the question directly Stefano but if you travel often, it might be worth buying a pair of plastic fins to take instead. I've seen models that are specific for travelling because the blade comes apart in pieces so they're easy to fit in normal suitcases etc I don't remember the brand and don't know how good they are but if you are interested let me know and I'll find out.

I would also post the fins to myself. Dont forget to insure them, tho. I didnt insure my gopro+sartek housing and now I silently sob in my pillow, because USPS ehhh... sent the parcel elsewhere (they dont even know where...)
