Finding a ‘Hidden Talent’ for freediving

Thanks for the alert, folks! This was a great programme, and I urge anyone to watch it on 4oD if you didn't see it on Tuesday.

I also liked Emma's article about it, but was baffled that they didn't let on to the applicants what it was about until so late on - how much testing effort did they waste on people who couldn't swim? Apparently about 60% of the population say they can, but from what I observe at my local pool, of those, only about 10% are happy to swim with their face in the water. And of these, I know from talking to some, many aren't happy with the idea of swimming underwater for any distance. So I suspect freediving as a sport is drawing from a potential pool of 1% of the population at the most.

You are probably right there Paul. Having said this it's amazing what one can achieve with determination, even if they don't know how to even swim... :)

Freediving without being able to swim confidently? Seriously scary!

I think it's the opposite actually :) you only need to be a confident swimmer if you are scared of sinking underwater ;-)

Well I think Free Immersion... no need for any swimming technique. :mute

And since the FIM records are close to the CWT I think FIM is quite respectable.
Though a nice monofin technique is still much more labours to learn and much pleasing to the eye.
