Finishing off the fish

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
The easiest way is to cut its gills and let it bleed to death.
The most efficient way is to grab it by the gills and stick your knife of stringer needle into its brain. This can be found by looking at its head from above and imagining an equilateral triangle between its eyes pointing towards its tail, the brain will be directly under that third point. You'll know when you hit it as the fish will quiver a little and then stop with its mouth open.

text book answer Pastor: perfect.

Too add, if the fish is too thick skinned or the IKE SPIKE (search forum) is too blunt, you can insert it upwards towards the brain from inside the gill plate. You can use your speartip as the IKE spike too, if it is sharp.

Anyone ever tried a hand held "pen" like gun that would hold a .22 cal bullet? Place over brain & shoot? (kind of like a mini bang stick)

Just thinking about making & trying one...the bigger fish we get have pretty thick skulls.

Gene

And also blow to pieces most fish we get in UK waters! I use a Rob Allen fish stringer which has a wicked point, push through gills upwards and break spine. Mullet must have watched Resident Evil because sometimes they refuse to die!

i use my knife and place the fish on a rock and it a small prick behind the head and pull forward towards the mouth, this i guess could be hard in deep waters, but i do like the way you do it spaniard only promblem there is i have not got the suitable stinge for that.

Pinggene, I'd be afraid of where that 22 slug might end up. Some odd angle richet or it passed through and into other flesh. Read on another board an instructor/shop owner in Florida had a bang stick with a .357 in it, dropped it on the back platform of the boat. Shot himself and had get a ride with the Coasties in a helo.

I doubt a .22 rimfire round would have enough power to penitrate anything but a very small fish. the expanding gasses would act like a powerhead, and probably kill a fish, if used surgically.

seems like a lot of fuss when a sharp dagger to the head works quickly and cleanly.

On a carp a sharp dagger won't get through without a hammer behind it.

A sturdy ice pick would do the trick on hard headed fish like carp...Maybe.

I'd say just cut thier gills and let 'em bleed out...Supposed to bleed out a fish if you can anyways...Not the we eat carp (in the U.S.)...but it is an effective way to kill the fish...And they say it helps with any "off" flavor in the meat.

In the ocean however maybe Sharks and or Barracuda might get a little bit crazy with all of the blood in the water.

My two cents....

I always hear other countries think we are thick headed. Maybe the carp are too??? :)

hahaha, I love it :D

you can also go in through an eye socket if you're having trouble, takes a little practice but works good.

A kill spike woult be a good accessory to have I think. The 20-30lb carp kicking around on the stringer gets to be a pain. I'm also thinking I will stringer them through the eyes next time rather than through the gills.

the spike on your stringer : slide it into the eyesockets around the "back" of one of the eyes and you'll feel where the point get hung up in the nerve tube that runs into the brain case. a good hard push and it slides in with a crunch. works like a pilot hole.

I currently use an RA stringer around 50% of the time & my flat, dagger-pointed dive knife the rest of the time (I think Ted suggested using the spear tip -- but mine is not as sharp as the stringer/knife). Spaniard is right about mullet (they also do not like being speared). I had a mullet yesterday, which was quickly subdued but which made the word "Terminator" spring to mind (the one made of liquid metal). I spiked the skull for a quick kill, then prodded it through the same hole fore & aft to make sure, then cut the gills to be extra sure. It continued to flinch (perhaps just nerves), so I stabbed a 1" cross into the skull will two stabs of the dagger. I threaded it on the stringer & left the spike stabbed through the skull & out of the bottom jaw. Sometime later it moved again:confused: -- must have been just nerves, surely.:martial
