I would like some constructive advice on my finning. Please take a look and give me your opinion.

hi blueface
i've been waiting for this since our last talk about your finning here on DB

at first glance i see that your finning seems symmetrical, and this is a good start

the big issue i can notice is about knee bending
not that the knee would not bend at all, but far less than you do

look at here (this video is not intended to show my finning, but you can see it fairly well):

Hi sgnips! Thanks you very much for your advice and thanks for noticing that my finning is more or less symmetrical. It is something that I must intend to do at least for awhile. In past videos I noticed my left leg had a wider range of motion so now I purposely try to be even.

It's the same old knee bending that I have to work on. :blackeyeI have been trying to keep straighter legs after viewing this video and I'll put up another video in a week or 2. By the way thanks for sharing your video. Your finning looks great!! You are like a fish in the water.

Thanks!

Blueface,

Technique depends a lot on what else you are doing. For pure efficiency, bend you kees less as sgnips said. Practice will get you improvement whatever blades you are using, but getting a softer pair of fins will help a lot. However, softer blades and spearfishing sometimes don't go together well. If I'm reef cruising, I want very soft blades with rails and use a straight leg kick. If I'm spearfishing, I want a stiffer blade with no rails and bend my legs a lot more. For me, the added acceleration that a stiff fin gives and better maneuverability of no rails is well worth the drop in efficiency.

Just my guess, but looking at the video, you could probably get a slightly softer set, allowing a straighter kick and still get all the acceleration you need for spearing.

Thanks connor! Your advice is always welcome and appreciated!:) I have another video that I have not posted yet. I have much straighter legs now. It feels so different. In the new video my legs bend slightly but it is only a result of the fin stroke. I believe that I'm using my hip flexors and glutes more that quads. I have been in the gym strengthening my lower body (and looking at girls:)) and I have been making great progress. I still have lots to work on. My statics are embarrassing.

Today I did 34 dives from 50 to 80 ft. with ease. Mild contractions and lactic in the legs. My times were 1:10 to 1:45 and I had loads of fun. Oh yeah! We speared some fish too!

Thanks!
