Finswimming world champ

Finswimming world cup occured in Egypt this week: i'm proud for my country that each of the four italian team members got medals (2 golds, 1 silver, 1 bronze). But it's surprising that no discussion about the world cup took place on DB forum. Did i miss it, or does nobody care?

yes, i've always wondered why finswimming is pretty underrepresented here...
i'd be interested to know more.. maybe we have to start another forum for it?

First of all, I have a huge appreciation for the art of finswimming, and I'm convinced that freedivers can learn a lot from finswimmers' technique, drills, etc. I'd definitely like to see as much of this useful info here - videos would be great!

But just to balance this out, and point out the differences between any sort of competitive swimming and freediving, I'd like to share with you this little passage from Pelizzari I just saw today:

"...a competitive swimmer spends their energy solely against the clock, and it is compulsory to reach the finish completely exhausted. In our sport this is not acceptable. Obviously, in apnea training the velocity of the swimming doesn't represent a definite objective."

"In the sea we almost always need to cross considerable distances, with the added complication of waves. We must try to attain maximum efficiency with minimum wasted energy. Therefore, we must work on training endurance..."

I know I'm probably stating the obvious here, but it's just so well put I couldn't resist it.

i'd love to see a link to the story too!

i love finswimming and i'm so sad that the US doesnt seem to give a crap about it. i heard that it beat out like karate for inclusion in the next olympics then someone told me once again it got nicked.

finswimming is SO efficient. i had an argument with someone that finswimming in the olympics is cheating because swimmers don't use fins.

to that i replied.. is riding a bicycle cheating for cyclists?

are tennis shoes cheating for runners?

of course not! now i could see if finswimmers were competing against normal swimmers, but if they're in a class all their own. how is that cheating?

i really wish finswimmers would TRULY be seen as the atheletes they (we) are.
